WINNIPEG – Adam Werner made 40 saves in his NHL debut and Nathan MacKinnon scored two goals and two assists as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-0 on Tuesday for their third consecutive victory.
Werner's shutout is shared by Pavel Francouz, who started on the net for the Avalanche but only lasted 31 seconds after getting injured.
Francouz was struck by an unbalanced Mark Scheifele and fell back and hit his head against the ice. He went to the locker room and the 22-year-old Swede interposed between the pipes for his first game in the NHL.
Rookie defender Cale Makar opened the scoring for Avalanche (11-5-2). Joonas Donskoi scored one goal and two assists, while Matt Calvert provided two assists.
Makar now has 18 points in 18 games to lead all NHL rookies. The Calgary native is also on a four-point series with four goals and three assists.
It was the first time this season that the Jets (10-8-1) were excluded.
Connor Hellebuyck made 21 saves for Winnipeg, ending his homestand's four-game series 2-1-1.
Colorado continues to defeat the wounds of key players.
The starting goalkeeper, Philipp Grubauer, missed his third consecutive game with a lower body injury, but took part in some of the team's training on Monday. Top line strikers Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog stay away.
Colorado, which began a five-game road trip, led 1-0 after the first period and maintained that lead after two.
The Avalanche played two power games in the first period, including that of Scheifele for interference from the goalkeeper. Makar hit the crossbar during the advantage of the second man.
Makar then scored when he bypassed Jets striker Mathieu Perreault and stopped for a moment before putting a low shot next to Hellebuyck at 19:01.
Werner managed to save his glove when Winnipeg sniper Patrik Laine imposed a hobby on him during a power play in the first period.
Called Eagles, an affiliate of the American Hockey League of Colorado, November 7, Werner faced a double Scheifele and Kyle Connor at the end of the second period, but resisted the shot of Connor.
The Jets beat the visitors 21-16 after the second.
MacKinnon quickly gave Avalanche a 2-0 lead when he scored his 10th goal of the season 18 seconds into the third period and added his second of the game at 7:13. Donskoi finished with a goal on a rebound at 13:13.
Winnipeg is off to a four-game road trip starting Thursday in Florida against the Panthers. Colorado will travel to Edmonton to face the Oilers on Thursday.
