Werder loses top scorer
The Bundesliga made its surprise transfer shortly before Deadline Day: Niclas Füllkrug switched from SV Werder Bremen to Borussia Dortmund. The two clubs officially announced this on Thursday. The 30-year-old attacker has a contract with the Black and Yellows until June 2026. “Sport1” recently reported that the transfer fee is a fixed 13 million euros plus 2 million euros. The change was in the offing in the morning – it is now certain that the Green-Whites will have to do without last season’s top scorer.

“Niclas is an attacking player, very good in the air, physically present, he convinces in one-on-one duels and is uncomfortable for his opponent in a duel,” explained BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl. “With all these skills, he embodies the profile we were looking for.” The manager assumes that Füllkrug “will tear himself up for our club.”
Füllkrug said after his move: “Borussia Dortmund is a very special club. I was really happy about the offer because joining this club is exactly what I wanted. At BVB I have the chance to develop as a player and gain new experiences. I’m really excited about the tasks ahead and I want to be as successful as possible with this team. I can hardly wait to experience the stadium with its extraordinary fans as a BVB professional.”
Sport BVB newcomer Füllkrug in the Bundesliga among the most expensive over 30 professionals
The most expensive over-30 purchase in the history of the Dortmund club to date is central defender Mats Hummels, whose return from FC Bayern in 2019 cost 30.5 million euros. Behind him will be newcomer Füllkrug, who clearly outperforms Anthony Modeste, Jörg Heinrich, Diego Klimowicz & Co. in terms of transfer fee. In the Bundesliga, Füllkrug is in the top 5 in this regard – level with Sandro Wagner, who also switched to FC Bayern for 13 million euros at the beginning of 2018.
Experienced filling jug deserves loud “Sport1” 6 million euros a year in the future. At Werder, his performances were to be rewarded with up to 3 million euros per season including bonuses in the course of an extension until 2026 – which did not come about, however, it was reported. Last year it was said to have been 2.5 million euros. At the Osterdeich, Füllkrug is in the top 5 of the most expensive departures. First of all, it was said that those responsible for Werder imagined around 20 million euros for the filling jug. After the transfers of Felix Nmecha (22) and Marcel Sabitzer (29), BVB allegedly only had a maximum of 10 million euros available for new staff – the Westphalians apparently stretched for Füllkrug.
The runner-up was looking for a centre-forward because Sébastien Haller (29) will probably take part in the Africa Cup of Nations early next year. Youssoufa Moukoko (18) would have been the only alternative in the squad. An exchange with the national team colleague that was rumored on Wednesday was probably not an issue for either of the negotiating clubs.
Sport This is how national coach Flick thinks about the transfer of Füllkrug – is Bella-Kotchap coming?
National coach Hansi Flick (quoted via „Deichstube“) said before the transfer about Füllkrug, which he expected to be nominated for the international matches of the German national team against Japan and France: “The selection he had or has is already in good form. Ultimately he has to decide for himself where I have the chance to play, where do I feel comfortable, which club suits me. There is no question that he can help the club with his personality and his quality.”

It is possible that Dortmund’s plans are not yet complete: Southampton’s German national player Armel Bella-Kotchap (21) is traded for the defensive. A transfer is loud „Sport1“-Reporter Patrick Berger but has become less likely because Rasmus Ankersen, club boss of the “Saints”, is demanding a rental fee of 8 million euros. Too much for BVB. „Sky“-Reporter Florian Plettenberg According to the report, the total volume of the deal – including the purchase option, bonuses, salary and consulting costs – would amount to 30 to 40 million euros.
