A special flight from the Thai capital Bangkok lands at Zurich Airport on Sunday morning. In the plane there is nobody less than Thai King Rama X. (69).
Anyone who wanted to watch the landing on the Internet, however, stayed in front of a black screen. The webcams were switched off – apparently the Thai royal family personally asked for the shutdown. But why did Zurich Airport comply with the request at all? At Blick’s request, Zurich Airport rejects the guilt. You didn’t turn off the cameras yourself. The Zurich canton police are responsible for this.
The Zurich canton police do not want to comment on the switching off of the cameras. The police also do not provide any information on the specific reasons for the shutdown. For safety reasons, it is said.
Kapo was brutal against photographers
The procedure is not new, however. As early as April 2020, when King Vajiralongkorn (69), as Rama X is actually called, arrived, the webcams were switched off. In addition, the Zurich canton police arrested a photographer who wanted to photograph the King of Thailand. The officials proceeded brutally.
The arrest was sharply criticized, among others by Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders Switzerland (RSF). The Kapo Zurich owed detailed explanations to the public even then. “The person pretended to be a media worker and resisted the control by the police,” said Werner Schaub, spokesman for the Zurich cantonal police, to the SRF at the time. The arrest was not made on the orders of the monarch, emphasized Schaub. So in the end there was no advertisement.
But back to the camera shutdown: The Thai king is no exception. At the WEF, too, the camera is switched off when the celebrity guests arrive and depart.
However, Rama X did not stay in Switzerland for long. Shortly after his arrival, the king had traveled on to Munich in his private Boeing 737, which was waiting for him.

Queen stays in Switzerland
One of his sons – the possible heir to the throne – goes to school in Geretsried in Bavaria. In other respects, too, the king seems to have been more comfortable in Bavaria than in Thailand for years.
His wife, Queen Suthida (43), is also said to have been on board. This is reported by former Reuters journalist and university lecturer Andrew MacGregor Marshall, who has excellent inside information from the Thai palace. Queen Suthida is said to have stayed in Switzerland. Presumably she is in Engelberg OW. (zis)
