Question from Christine

We hear a lot about the third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, but when is it due?

Hello Christine,

Indeed in the last few days, we hear a lot about the third dose because of the loss of effectiveness of the antibodies over time.

Until now, the recall campaign only concerned people over 65 and people at risk, such as obese and diabetics, provided they were vaccinated more than six months ago. This represents 18 million French people.

Now, nearly four million more could be added if the government follows the advice of the High Health Authority (HAS). It recommends that the reminders be extended to “caregivers, medical transport and professionals in the medico-social sector”. HAS has also recommended it to those around people who are immunocompromised.

EMA and HAS lead the way

In recent days, the HAS has paved the way for a generalization of the recall to all adults, even if it is premature. Although the circumstances do “at this stage do not justify recommending the administration of an additional dose in the general population, (…) the HAS stresses, however, that the administration of a booster dose will probably become necessary in the coming months “.

On the side of the European Medicines Agency, Monday, October 4, we approved the administration of a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for those over 18 years old, fearing that protection against Covid-19 may not drops after the first injections. Everything therefore converges towards a third dose in the general population, but it remains to be seen when, this will occur.

Good day to you
