Violence against children is increasing: police work before the collapse

As of: May 26th, 2021 3:04 p.m.

More abuse, more sexual violence online, more deaths: According to crime statistics, violence against children increased significantly in 2020. The investigators can hardly keep up with their work.

It’s one alarm call after the next. Johannes-Wilhelm Rörig, the abuse commissioner of the federal government, still seems touched after ten years in office: “Behind these numbers of the police crime statistics, there is ten thousand times the suffering of the children and adolescents affected. Indescribable pain, powerlessness, disgust and fear.” Together with Holger Münch, President of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), Rörig has just presented how much children and young people suffer from sexual violence.">">">

“Do not offer any unlawful areas on the Internet”

Around 150 children died last year. There are more than 14,000 abuse crimes. Above all, child pornography on the Internet has increased suddenly – by more than half. Also because more data was supplied, especially from the USA. That helps to better illuminate the so-called dark field, but it is also a problem, warns Rörig: “Sexual violence against children and adolescents on the Internet really seems to be slipping away from us. Experts tell me: Rörig, it’s actually already 5 past the day 12 with a view to the dimension. ”

The state criminal investigation offices can hardly comply with the reported cases, says the abuse officer. “It seems to be the case that we have really reached a tipping point in this field. Police investigation must not collapse. We must not offer the abusers on the Internet any legal free spaces.” Rörig calls for more determination, more planning and, above all, more staff in law enforcement: “The Internet must no longer remain a paradise for pedo criminals.”

Violence against children has increased significantly

Corona crisis as a driver?

Has Corona contributed to the fact that the number of cases has risen so high, the lockdown, the narrowness? BKA President Münch is cautious. That is not yet provable. But the pandemic is an exceptional situation for families. “The spatial confinement, existential fears, family tensions can contribute to the fact that violence discharges more strongly, and if the perpetrators and victims are then continuously at home, there is only a very limited possibility for children to draw attention to violence.”

The abuse officer Rörig calls for a better positioned cyber police, with online guards directly on the Internet, so that the police are located where children and young people are actually harassed. “In the end we all have to be vigilant together,” says BKA President Münch. Because most cases of child abuse take place in a private environment, in the family, on the Internet. Therefore, the Criminal Investigation Chief appeals: “Make the children aware of possible dangers. Instruct them to use the Internet and social media in a safety-conscious manner. Each and every one of us is challenged.”
