Villarreal wins the Europa League after an epic penalty shootout against ManUnited
A new name has been added to the list of European Cup winning teams. The Spanish club Villarreal has won the Europa League – after a penalty shootout against Manchester United, in which 21 of 22 shooters scored and only United goalie David de Gea failed.
After 120 minutes it was 1: 1. With Villarreal, the clear underdog took the lead after 29 minutes. After a free kick, Gerard Moreno prevailed in the penalty area and steered the ball into the goal. The Spanish international, who is also in the squad for the European Championship, turned the Spaniards’ first and only significant chance to score into a goal, his seventh in the Europa League and the 30th overall this season.
It took Manchester United a little more than half time to develop the force that has distinguished the team this season. After the break, the English improved steadily and Cavani’s equalization was the final wake-up call.
After the 1: 1 of the Uruguayan, who had fought rather unluckily until then, the favorite went into the duels with more determination. In the 70th minute, Marcus Rashford should have made it 2-1.
Sovereignty and security were lost at Villarreal. After the 1-1 draw, it struggled to save itself in extra time. There, the “yellow submarine” remarkably offered a duel at eye level with much more courageous tactics. Villarreal took more dangerous action in the last 30 minutes than in the previous 90 minutes.
The penalty shootout
Not only all field players scored, but also Villarreal’s Argentinian goalie Geronimo Rulli. The goalkeeper, who was only a substitute in the Spanish championship this season, when he made the 22nd attempt in only the second penalty shoot-out in a Europa League final, that of Manchester United goalie David de Gea, made himself a hero.
The success coach
The other big winner besides keeper Rulli is Villarreal’s trainer Unai Emery. It was also a small revenge for the 49-year-old in front of international observers after the more or less hapless seasons at Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal. Back at home he has now achieved great things again and has become the record holder of this competition with his fourth Europa League title.
The defeat of Manchester United is also a setback for their coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has to wait for his first title with the English. They haven’t won a trophy since the 2017 Europa League – a long time for a club with the reputation of Manchester United.
