Should micropayments be regulated in the video game sector? This is the conviction of 20 consumer defense associations from 18 European countries, which are launching a coordinated action this Tuesday, May 31, 2022. Objective: to make the regulators react so that they look into this question. The Fédération romande des consommateurs (FRC) is taking part in this large-scale operation, which is based on a report by the Norwegian Consumer Council which details the commercial practices of the gaming industry.
Why it matters. The Council of States, which will debate on June 9 the law on the protection of minors in the film and video game sector, has withdrawn all reference to micropayments, while the National Council had introduced a provision concerning these transactions. The FRC had fought for the law to also protect minors vis-à-vis these commercial practices. For Jean Busché, head of digital issues at the FRC:
