Víctor Trujillo reproaches AMLO for what he said about militarization years ago

Without waiting for the decision of Congress, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that he will issue a presidential agreement so that the National Guard (GN) passes “completely” to the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) and no longer to the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC).

In this sense, in a morning press conference, the head of the federal Executive announced that there will be a complete restructuring of the SSPC and now it will become the “Secretariat of Public Security and Justice”

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador affirmed that he is looking for a legal mechanism so that the National Guard continues to be a civil institution, but that it depends on the Secretary of Defense (Sedena).

“It will continue to be a civil institution, depending on the Ministry of Defense, but we are going to wait. I have a moral obligation to defend this point and I will continue to do so, ”he said in his morning conference this Tuesday at the National Palace.

López Obrador said that he is analyzing how the reform of the law can be carried out, and at the same time “we are going to present the constitutional reform so that the National Guard is an armed arm of the Defense.”

Decree to the National Guard?

“Yes (a constitutional reform is needed), but it may be that we find a legal mechanism that does not require constitutional reform. A law, that the Constitution is not violated, and yes, I already explained it; if it is considered to violate the Constitution, the conservatives will go to the Judiciary, to the Court; They already announced it, but what I want is to fulfill my responsibility.

“I am the President of Mexico and I think it is convenient that the National Guard remain as a branch of the Sedena, so that it is given stability over time and does not become corrupted and continues to fulfill its function of guaranteeing public safety,” said this tomorrow during his press conference, known as “La Mañanera”.

Demilitarization, before and after

However, actor Víctor Trujillo reproached the President for having a different opinion on militarization in 2010.

Trujillo shared a video from that year in which López Obrador assured that “President Juárez knew that we could not bet on a military republic, but on a civilian republic” and that “it should help us to understand that it is not with the Army as problems of insecurity and violence can be solved”.

At that time, Felipe Calderón was president and according to AMLO a law was being promoted to give powers that could be “excessive” to the Army, for which, he said, “we cannot accept a militaristic government.”

And that the Army not be used “to make up for the incapacities of civil governments…”, pointed out López Obrador, who was betting that violence be addressed with jobs and care for young people.
