  • The prices for used cars on the Swiss market have risen sharply over the past three years.
  • The corona pandemic and delivery bottlenecks contributed significantly to the massive price increase.
  • The biggest jump in price was for electric cars.

Since the start of the pandemic, used cars have become 28 percent more expensive, the comparison service Comparis writes in a statement. The prices of pure electric cars rose by about half, those for hybrid vehicles by 26 percent.

At the same time, the supply of used cars fell by 29 percent. The reason for this lies in the delivery bottlenecks for new cars. Waiting times for new cars have increased significantly.

On the other hand, there are fewer barter transactions. In the first quarter of 2020, a used car cost an average of CHF 23,161. In the third quarter of 2022 it was CHF 29,550.

Electric cars even more expensive

Buyers for pure electric cars had to shell out a lot more. In the same period, they rose in price by an average of 34,681 compared to 51,878.

According to Comparis expert Andrea Auer, the trend is clearly towards electric cars, despite the rise in prices for used cars. Most manufacturers now have at least one electric model on offer. As a result, the second-hand market will grow significantly.
