Unseeded Trevisan to last four at Roland Garros, also Gauff first

Italian tennis star Martina Trevisan has reached the semifinals of a grand slam tournament for the first time. The number 59 in the world won in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-3 against Leylah Fernandez, the number eighteen in the ranking.

Cori Gauff, eighteenth on the placement list, experienced the same first. She reached the last four by winning the American meeting with Sloane Stephens: 7-5, 6-2.

Ten games in a row

The 28-year-old Trevisan had also reached the quarterfinals in Paris in 2020, the year in which she made her grand slam debut at the Australian Open. She did that as a qualifier at the expense of fifth-seeded Kiki Bertens. But in 2021, she won just three matches at the WTA level in the entire season.

This year she is back on track. She captured her first WTA title in Rabat earlier this month and is now unbeaten for ten games in a row.

Fernandez, the losing finalist of last year’s US Open, reached the quarterfinals of a clay tournament for the first time and was jokingly dubbed ‘Claylah’.
