A bumpy start for US Vice President Kamala Harris’ first trip abroad. Technical problems forced her machine to turn around.
Kamala Harris wanted to go on her first trip abroad since taking office on Sunday.
However, technical problems with the aircraft led to a return to the military airfield in Maryland.
With a delay and in a different plane, she finally traveled to Guatemala.
The reason for their trip is the flow of refugees towards the USA.
“I’m fine,” Kamala Harris told journalists after the incident. She was on her way to Guatemala, her first trip abroad as US Vice President. Due to technical problems, however, the pilot had to turn back shortly after the start on Sunday. “We all said a little prayer, but we’re fine.” Your spokeswoman assured that it was a “technical problem” and that there were no safety concerns.
Harris had to wait an hour and a half on a military airfield near Washington before she could finally continue her journey with another plane. In Guatemala, Harris wants to meet President Alejandro Giammattei on Monday. She will then travel to Mexico, where she will meet with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Tuesday.
Tens of thousands without valid papers
The focus of her trip is the crisis on the southern border of the USA. In April alone, almost 180,000 people were prevented from entering the country without valid papers.
Illegal immigration has become a major challenge for the administration of US President Joe Biden. The arrival of tens of thousands of people, mainly from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, poses enormous challenges for the US authorities. They have major problems in adequately accommodating the migrants who have been arrested. Above all, there is concern about dealing with children and young people who are traveling without their parents.
