Libuše Šafránková, the celebrity from the cult fairytale film “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” (1973), died at the age of 68, two days after her birthday. Her son confirms this to the Czech TV station “CNN Prima News”. Šafránková had fought lung cancer for years.

“The epitome of the fairy tale classic”

Her Cinderella was different – and maybe that’s why she was so popular. Not only could it dance, but it could also handle the crossbow and climb trees. In the 1973 co-production between Czechoslovakia and the GDR, Cinderella made three magical hazelnuts happy.

TV stations still regularly show the Christmas classic, for example in Germany, Norway, Slovakia, Spain and the Czech Republic. He can also be seen often on Swiss television: “SRF” showed him on the last Christmas Eve (December 24, 2020) as part of its festive program. “Since its creation, the film has become the epitome of the classic fairy tale,” wrote “SRF” at the time.

Šafránková was very well known and loved in his own country. She plays the leading role in “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella”, Pavel Travnicek the prince. The German actors Carola Braunbock (stepmother), Rolf Hoppe (king) and Karin Lesch (queen) also appear in the film. The shooting took place in Moritzburg Castle in Saxony, where there has been an exhibition on the film every year since 2009.

Šafránková starred in a dozen films, including the drama “Kolya” (1996), which won an Oscar for best foreign film. She was also seen in the television series “Humberto Circus” (1988) and “The Necklace” (1992). She was married to the actor Josef Abrhám. He is known for his leading role in «Leaving» (2011) by the Czech playwright and politician Vaclav Havel.
