Triathlon – Anne Haug: After two years without the Hawaii World Cup, “almost like Olympic” sport

Tinajo (dpa) – The start next Saturday over half the Ironman distance on Lanzarote is no substitute for world champion Anne Haug for the again canceled race in Hawaii.

“Just a nice end to the season,” said the 38-year-old athlete from Bayreuth of the German press agency. Instead of her title triumph two years ago on the Pacific island, Haug is currently preparing for the race over 1.9 kilometers of swimming, 90 kilometers of cycling and 21.1 kilometers of running on the Canary Island volcanic island.

“I know every stone here, I feel at home here,” she explained: “I associate Hawaii with the World Cup, this is the place where I am under the greatest pressure and under the most adverse external conditions you can imagine against best in the world. “

Postponement to 2022

Two years ago, she became the first German woman to win the World Championships over 3.86 kilometers of swimming, 180.2 kilometers of cycling and 42.2 kilometers of running. Last year, the World Cup had to be canceled due to the corona pandemic. The 2021 race, which should have taken place next weekend, has now been postponed to May 2022 and awarded to St. George in the US state of Utah.

What impact two years without a title race will have on her own career is difficult to say, said Haug. “Because you don’t know how it would have gone if the World Cup had taken place a year ago and would now take place this weekend as well.”

Big hype

After the triumph in 2019, the hype about her person was of course extremely high. The media attention almost overwhelmed her a bit – “and then Corona came. Everything was reduced from zero to 100. That was a shock, but it also showed me that I still do the sport because I do it love”.

She was able to recharge her batteries and maybe the desire increased even more. “Two years without a World Cup gives her even more special meaning, it’s almost like the Olympics. I’m more motivated than ever,” emphasized Haug, who doesn’t even think about the end of her career. You see no reason to set a time limit.
