The 85th Tour de Suisse which starts on June 12 in Küsnacht (ZH) will be that of a return to normality, after the cancellation of the 2020 edition and a 2021 vintage marked by the absence of an audience, Covid obliges. “The festive spirit will be back”, anticipate the organizers.
The Tour will welcome champions like Peter Sagan, Remco Evenepoel, Thomas Pidcock and Geraint Thomas. With 17 stage successes, Sagan holds the record for victories. But the Slovak is having a difficult start to the season. It is quite different for Evenepoel.
Evenepoel and favorite
The Belgian has already won eight bouquets, including Liège-Bastogne-Liège and, most recently, the Tour of Norway. Thomas Pidcock will be one of the attractions. The Briton Geraint Thomas, winner of the Tour de France in 2018 and the Tour de Romandie last year, is on paper one of the favorites but a big question mark remains as to his current form.
The Swiss elite will be present almost in full. Twenty Swiss riders will be at the start, including Stefan Bissegger, Marc Hirschi, Stefan Küng, Gino Mäder and Mauro Schmid, who has just distinguished himself in the Tour of Italy.
