TotalEnergies has commissioned the largest biogas plant in France, near Pau

The BioBéarn methanization unit, the largest in France, was commissioned in Mourenx (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) on Thursday January 12, 2023. It has an annual production capacity of 160 GWh. At the origin of this project: TotalEnergies, which intends to invest massively in the development of renewable gas.

A vast concrete area, a large hangar and three 25-meter high vats in the color of fir green. In an industrial area near the town of Mourenx, about twenty kilometers from Pau (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), the new BioBéarn territorial methanisation unit blends into the petrochemical landscape of the Lacq basin. The site, the seventh of its kind for TotalEnergies, required 38 million euros of investment. Initially scheduled to enter service in mid-December, BioBéarn finally injected its first megawatt hours into Teréga’s gas transmission network on Thursday January 12, 2023. With an annual production capacity of up to 160 GWh, this is the largest French biogas unit now in operation. By way of comparison, the majority of agricultural injection biogas plants have a capacity of less than 15 GWh/year.
