Drinking your coffee is quite an art. Besides variety, good timing should also be taken into account.
Many start the day with a good cup of coffee. It is the perfect drink to wake up and recharge your batteries for the whole day. But contrary to what one might think, the early morning is far from the most suitable time to have your first coffee. This is what Tracy Lockwood Beckerman, a British dietitian, just revealed during an interview for the Huffington Post. « There are studies that show that it’s not a good idea to drink coffee right after getting up. It can make you very nervous, for example« .

Indeed, drinking your coffee too early in the day would have a counterproductive effect and might not wake us up at all, the opposite of the desired effect. Behind this phenomenon, hides cortisol, a hormone secreted by the human body. As soon as we get up, our biological clock starts, the brain then commands a cortisol discharge in order to put the body back in activity after the night. Therefore, the best time to drink your first coffee and recharge your batteries wouldn’t be during the first hours of the day, but rather an hour or two after getting up. At this point, cortisol levels begin to drop and the natural energy boost will be over.

So, if you wake up around 6:30 am-7am, it is advisable to drink your first cup around 9:30 am and 10:30 am. Those who sleep in and get up between 10:30 am and 11:00 am should have their coffee around noon. You are of course free to drink your coffee when you prefer, but you have now been warned.
