Thielemann’s Salzburg farewell |

“Lohengrin” as Dernière for the artistic director of the Easter Festival.

With a new production of Wagner’s “Lohengrin”, Christian Thielemann is saying goodbye next year as artistic director of the Salzburg Easter Festival.

Jossi Wieler, Sergio Morabito and Anna Viebrock are the directing team. The title role is sung by the American Eric Cutler, Elsa Jacquelyn Wagner.

At a joint press conference, Thielemann and the designated artistic director Klaus Bachler stated that they had “found each other” during the conversation. Whether Thielemann will continue to conduct at Easter in Salzburg, however, remained open.

In 2022 the conductor will also conduct a choir concert with Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony and the “Te Deum” at Easter, as well as a program with music by Bartók (viola concert with Antoine Tamestit) and Richard Strauss’ “Alpine Symphony”.

Another concert will be conducted by Tugan Sokhiev (Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony), the “Concert for Salzburg” will be conducted by Myung-Whun Chung (Beethoven / Brahms). On the 125th anniversary of Johannes Brahms’ death there will also be chamber music with soloists from the Staatskapelle Dresden, which, like Thielemann, will play for the last time in Salzburg at Easter.

The future Easter Festival boss Bachler emphasized of course: “Everything is always possible” …
