These actors are Germany's Oscar hopefuls

The German Netflix production “Nothing New in the West” has been nominated for an Oscar nine times. But who are the actors in the anti-war drama?

Will a German strip be awarded “Best Film” at this year’s Oscars? It would be the first time that Germany would win the prize in this category. “Nothing New in the West” was not only nominated for Best Picture at the 95th Academy Awards, but also in eight other categories. This makes the drama, which is based on the literary classic by Erich Maria Remarque, one of the favourites. You can read about what the film is about here.

The Austrian Felix Kammerer plays the main character Paul Bäumer. This was Kammerer’s breakthrough and his very first film role. Previously, the 27-year-old Viennese had only acted in plays. So far, the actor has less than 8,000 followers on Instagram. The nominations for “Nothing New in the West” could mean the big breakthrough for him on an international level.

Albrecht Schuch plays Stanislaus Katczinsky, a soldier who becomes friends with Bäumer. Schuch already has more film experience than Kammerer. He got his first role in the comedy “Westwind” (2011). There he played alongside Volker Bruch and Friederike Becht.

This was followed by an engagement in “Die Vermessung der Welt” (2012), where he appeared alongside colleagues such as Florian David Fitz and Katharina Thalbach. The actor, who was born in Jena, was also seen in episodes of “Tatort” and “Bad Banks”.

He is a real teenage star: Aaron Hilmer came to the popular series “Die Pfefferkörner” as a 14-year-old. The 23-year-old also played in 2018 alongside Luna Wedler in the movie “The most beautiful girl in the world”. For this he received a Bunte New Faces Award in 2019.

He was seen on TV in episodes of “Notruf Hafen Kante”, “Tatort” or “Großstadtrevier”. The actor is also part of the cast of the Danish-German television series “Sløborn”. In “Nothing New in the West” he took on the role of Albert Kropp, a school friend of the 17-year-old protagonist Paul Bäumer.

In addition to acting, Hilmer also tried his hand at singing: for the soundtrack of the film “The most beautiful girl in the world” he recorded the song “Always, if we see each other” under his role name Cyril together with singer Lea, which was ranked 18th in 2018 reached the single charts and was certified platinum. So far this is his only released song.
