Are they just outliers in the statistics? Or are the numbers already showing a clear trend? Will the return of the first holidaymakers from abroad have an impact?
The fact is: the corona virus is spreading more strongly again in Germany – there are significantly more new infections than on the previous days. A total of 781 were registered on Saturday, as can be seen from the data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). The number of deaths increased by seven to 9118. From Thursday to Friday, the number increased by 805, there were ten new deaths.
On Sunday morning, the RKI recorded 305 fewer new cases and no further Covid 19 deaths, but these numbers are not very meaningful, since most health authorities do not report on weekends. The total number of confirmed infections thus increased to 205,269.
“This development is very worrying and will continue to be closely monitored by the RKI,” a RKI spokeswoman said on Friday at the request of the German Press Agency. “It is imperative to avoid further aggravating the situation.” You can also see how many counties there have been new cases in the past few days on our interactive live map.
More than 800 infections within 24 hours – if the outbreak at the Tönnies slaughterhouse was left out – last occurred in mid-May. On May 14, 905 infections were registered, after which the number steadily decreased with slight fluctuations.

Of the 781 new cases on Saturday, most were in North Rhine-Westphalia (301); the most populous federal state has also had the highest number of positive tests in relation to the number of inhabitants for some time. In Bavaria (148), Baden-Württemberg (88), Berlin (63) and Hesse (58), too, the number of newly discovered infections is well above the average of the past few weeks.
Coronavirus test positive rate does not change
In the past few days, more than 500 new infections had been reported several times, compared to 300 to 400 previously. However, there have also been more tests recently – and the number of positive results in the past week was 0.6 percent similar to the previous week.
Furthermore, none of the 294 counties in Germany is currently above the threshold of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days, which is the limit for when more stringent measures must be taken at the latest.

However, the number of counties that have not reported any new cases of Sars-CoV-2 in the past seven days is also falling. On Saturday there were 84 after 93 on Friday. On June 14, 155 counties had not reported a single coronavirus case to the RKI in the previous seven days. Most of those newly infected registered here Berlin (209), Munich (109) and Mettmann (96).
“New corona cookers that could turn into high numbers”
According to Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU), the second wave of infections of the pandemic has already arrived in Germany. “The second corona wave is already there. It already takes place every day, ”said Kretschmer of the“ Rheinische Post ”(Saturday edition). “We have new foci of infection every day, which could become very high numbers.” The task now is to break this wave with the health authorities every day.

“The increasing number of positive tests and the spread of new infections are critical signals,” said virologist Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit from the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg. “There is not one central stove, but a general increase in area. The infection chains are therefore more difficult to understand and not so easy to break. “
Look for reasons for coronavirus spread
According to RKI estimates, the number of reproductions, or R-value for short, with a data status of July 25, midnight, was 1.24 in Germany (previous day: 1.08). This means that an infected person infects another person on average. The R-value shows the infection process approximately one and a half weeks beforehand.

The RKI also specifies a so-called seven-day R. It refers to a longer period and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value stood at 1.25 (previous day: 1.16) as of July 25, midnight. It shows the infection from 8 to 16 days ago.
“We are far from being in an area where the health authorities would no longer be able to follow up,” Schmidt-Chanasit told Der Spiegel. “You have to look closely now and check what it is: larger meetings that are now allowed again? At reopened daycare centers and schools? Or are they mostly returning travelers? “
According to the report, the infections were diagnosed more and more in holidaymakers returning from abroad, at least in some federal states – in Baden-Württemberg the travelers came mainly from Balkan countries, in Hamburg from Turkey.
Background information on the corona virus:
Among other things, the virologist Alexander Kekulé therefore spoke in favor of mandatory corona virus tests for vacation returnees from high-risk areas. “If you travel to a dangerous place and go back, then you should get tested urgently. I think it would make sense to make this compulsory, ”said Kekulé in an interview with radio program Bayern 2 on Friday.
Mandatory tests should also apply if a neighboring country of Germany is declared a risk area, according to the virologist from the University of Halle (Saale). “If a neighboring country is really designated as a real risk area (..). Keyword Luxembourg, it’s just as dangerous as Egypt. “
Spahn tests mandatory tests for returnees from high-risk areas
The health ministers of the federal and state governments decided on Friday against mandatory tests for returnees. Instead, travelers should only be tested at their own request when they arrive at German airports – if they come back from risk areas. Around 130 countries around the world are currently classified as coronavirus risk areas based on the scientific expertise of the RKI.
In view of the increasing number of cases, the federal government is now examining a legal obligation to carry out coronavirus tests for vacation returnees from high-risk areas. In general, it is important to prevent the corona virus from spreading again in Germany, said Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) on Saturday on Deutschlandfunk. “And yes, we also check whether it is legally possible, that is an encroachment on the freedom to oblige someone to test.” Spahn emphasized that the courts were very careful that each encroachment was proportionate.
