The office of the President of Ecuador, Guillermo Laso, announced that he is recovering after undergoing prostate surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital in the United States.
The office added on Thursday that Laso was scheduled to return home on Sunday, without saying why he needed surgery.
Laso has undergone several surgeries during his tenure, including an eyelid procedure he underwent at another Houston hospital last year after being diagnosed with a form of skin cancer.
Laso is currently ruling his country by decree after he dissolved the National Assembly last week, attributing the move to a political crisis and internal turmoil.
This move pushed the date for the presidential and legislative elections to August.
