The statue of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen was vandalized, on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, a Russian flag was dropped on the plinth of the monument.
The monument representing the heroine of a story by Hans Christian Andersen is a well-known symbol of the Danish capital. The white-blue-red flag was painted on the plinth, probably as a sign of support for Russia, which invaded Ukraine a year ago and is occupying territories from this country, reports Agerpres.
Danish police said they had opened an investigation into the incident, but did not mention any leads.
The bronze statue – located since 1913 on a rather isolated alley – has been the target of attacks on other occasions as well. In 1964, the Little Mermaid’s head was cut off and the original has never been found. In 1998, another beheading took place, but the fragment was later returned. In 2003, the monument was targeted by an explosion. Several times, the statue was painted or marked with various messages.
