«Choose your mama!» The French hotel chain Mama Shelter uses this slogan to advertise its 15 hotels worldwide. And soon also for their newest branch in Zurich-Oerlikon, in the former Swissôtel, right next to the train station.
Credit Suisse, which owns the building, has signed a long-term contract with the operators.
Combining travel, work and leisure
At Credit Suisse’s request, the large roof will be made accessible to the general public. In addition to a catering concept, the new tenants will in future operate a bar on the balcony.
There is also a co-working zone, which fits in perfectly with the concept and the core target group of the hotel chain. Millennials and Generation Z frequent Mama Shelter. They like to combine their travel with business matters, are mobile and can work anywhere. This range of business and leisure activities, also known as bleisure, should be attractive to city travelers.
Nine hotel floors, mini lofts and conference rooms
The highest hotel in Switzerland at 85 meters had to close two years ago due to the Corona crisis. 270 employees – including all apprentices – lost their jobs at the time. In future, the building will no longer be used primarily for hotel operations – this only includes the bottom nine of the total of 28 floors. In the remaining part of the high-rise building, 132 apartments are being built, mostly in the form of mini-lofts with 1½ to 2½ rooms.
In addition to the hotel lobby, the ground floor and first floor will be home to a restaurant, shops, conference rooms and a co-working zone. The opening of the Mama Shelter is planned for the second half of 2024. (cny)
