Bencic masters the first hurdle with ease

Belinda Bencic has started the new season successfully. The 24-year-old from Eastern Switzerland (WTA 23) prevailed 6: 3, 6: 2 against the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia (WTA 88) in the first round of the WTA 500 tournament in Sydney. Bencic acted extremely confidently with his own service and won 36 out of 46 points. The two played against each other for the first time. Bencic, who started the season a week later than planned due to a corona illness, will face French qualifier Oceane Dodin (WTA 96) in the round of 16.

Teichmann retired in Adelaide

Jil Teichmann (WTA 37), on the other hand, will have to tackle the Australian Open without a win in preparation. The Zealander lost in the first round in Adelaide 6: 1, 6: 7 (3: 7) 4: 6 against the American qualifier Lauren Davis (WTA 95). The number 7 seed from Switzerland actually had the game in hand and served at 6: 1, 6: 5 to win the match before breaking in and losing 9 points in a row.

Stricker survives 1st qualifying round

Dominic Stricker survived the 1st qualifying round of the Australian Open in Melbourne. The 19-year-old from Bern prevailed against the Egyptian Mohamed Safwat after losing the starting set with 3: 6, 6: 2, 6: 1. Also in the 2nd round is Simona Waltert (WTA 227), who finally won against the Argentinean Paula Ormaechea (WTA 184) with 6: 1, 4: 6, 6: 0. Marc-Andrea Hüsler (ATP 183), however, failed at the first opportunity as did Conny Perrin (WTA 233) and Susan Bandecchi (WTA 175). In the women’s category, only Stefanie Vögele and Waltert survived the first round of qualification. Leonie Küng and Ylena In-Albon left on Monday.
