Even my 2014 iPad Air 2 will get an update to iPadOS 15 later this year – that’s pretty cool. In the editorial office, however, we discussed what would have to happen for such long updates on Android. I came across three reasons why such a long update period cannot work on Android.
Of course, it makes sense from an ecological point of view to keep devices in operation for as long as possible. However, this article should not necessarily be about sustainability. However, I will briefly go into devices like the Fairphone 3 later, in which a manufacturer manages the balancing act between Android and sustainability at least a little better.
Reason 1: the cost
The main reason why Android devices are provided with updates for comparatively short periods of time is in all likelihood the cost. Developing, testing, and distributing version updates is expensive and tedious. This requires consultation and consultation with the manufacturer as well as with component and operating system suppliers.
The problem multiplies with the size of the product lines and with the variety of combination options in the Android system. We don’t have numbers to specify the magnitude of this support cost, but considering that Xiaomi announced more products in one week than Apple did in all of 2020 …
In a way, these costs are already factored into the price you have to pay for an iPhone. In return, Apple customers expect better support and a longer warranty. Adjusting the support times for androids would ultimately lead to price increases. And in a highly competitive market like that of smartphones, it seems unrealistic to expect a manufacturer to offer such comprehensive coverage with updates for its entire range on its own.
It would also require that every user appreciates the value of the extended support. And not just power users – even if the purchase of a flagship is accompanied by the expectation of more updates than with a cheap mobile phone. And that brings us to the second point!
Reason 2: Decline in value
Planned obsolescence certainly plays a role here, but Android manufacturers simply don’t have the same incentive to offer updates for devices that have been on the market for a long time. While there are a few exceptions for certain devices, Android smartphones usually suffer immensely.
The devices, which are already cheap compared to Apple’s smartphones, also lose value more quickly – which leads us to a chicken-and-egg problem. It should be noted, however, that the devices not only lose their resale value, but also their market value.
One indicator of this (or perhaps a consequence of it?) Is the hectic strategy when releasing new devices. In some cases, new devices follow only six months after their predecessor, and this also contributes to a faster disinterest in older Android smartphones.
Apple also has another advantage: the value of the apple logo on the back! For this, users are willing to invest a little more money, which of course increases profit margins. Investing parts of these margins back into the provision of updates is an advantage over Android manufacturers.
Reason 3: Outdated hardware and drivers
Another great advantage of Apple and its products is greater control over the components that are built into the devices. In addition to the SoCs used, this even applies to the cores used in them, since Apple produces its chips itself. The CPU is based on an ARM architecture, the GPU is derived from the British PowerVR.
In addition to reducing costs, the company is not tied to suppliers, which can be illustrated very well using the example of the FairPhone 2. The mobile phone appeared shortly before the iPhone 6S in 2015 and will get Android 9 in 2021 – you read that right: Android 9!
The update of the modular phone is the result of the company’s collaboration with the community to circumvent the lack of support from Qualcomm: Qualcomm has long since discontinued the necessary updates for the Snapdragon 801 used in the FairPhone 2.
In order for Android devices to receive more version updates, component manufacturers such as Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung and Co. would have to extend the support time of their processors. Not to mention the suppliers of the sensors and numerous other parts that are built into smartphones.
There are endless combinations of hardware and Google promises to counteract this problem a little with Project Treble. The aim is to reduce the importance of suppliers in the update process. But despite the advances made by manufacturers, we are still a long way from promising faster (and longer) updates for Android.
Despite this advantage for Apple, the long-term support was indirectly responsible for a negative effect (depending on your point of view): by offering updates for older devices, the performance of some models had to be reduced. You may remember the controversial “#batterygate”. Since the batteries lost capacity over time, Apple then lowered the performance of older iPhones to ensure longer battery life. And it’s not unreasonable to think that such concerns would crop up with Android models as well.
In summary, the biggest challenge for super-long Android updates seems to be the cost. Unless consumers use their wallets to make it clear that they value long-term support, manufacturers and component suppliers have no incentive to do so. At the very least, FairPhone’s tenacity and Samsung’s commitment to updates show that all is not lost.
