NFL Playoffs 2021: Tom Brady vs. Drew Brees: The duel of the quarterback “grandpas”

Eight teams are still in the Divisional Round race for the Super Bowl. A duel of legends is already driving football fans crazy. The preview.

In no other area are superlatives used as often as in sport – and not always rightly. But what the football fans on Monday night (0.40 a.m. /Prosieben, DAZN) expected in the Divisional Round, i.e. the quarter-finals of the NFL playoffs, is a duel of superlatives. The New Orleans Saints with quarterback legend Drew Brees welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with quarterback legend Tom Brady. Brees, 42 years old, has it once
Super Bowl
won. His counterpart, 43 years old, could already put six Super Bowl rings on his fingers. No quarterback in the history of the
NFL
threw more yards and touchdowns than either of them.

Although many young quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson are now mixing up the league, Brady and Brees have still been able to assert themselves. Before the duel, a photo was circulating on the Internet showing the two playmakers as “grandpas” – with the addition that the game was in the
USA
on the History Channel would be seen. Both quarterbacks shared the picture and reacted with amusement on social networks.

It would be particularly steeped in history if Tom Brady moved into the Super Bowl. A team has never played the Super Bowl (February 7th in Tampa, Florida) in their own stadium. But before that, his Buccaneers have to beat the Saints first – and that will be difficult enough. Because the two teams not only have future Hall of Famers as playmakers, the rest of the team are also made up of stars. Regardless of whether it’s the two defensive rows, Brady’s numerous top receivers such as Mike Evans, Antonio Brown and Rob Gronkowski or the Saints’ star running back, Alvin Kamara. The game already feels like an early Super Bowl.

A prognosis is therefore hardly possible. In the end, however, Brady made the somewhat stronger impression. But be careful: In the regular season there have already been two duels between the Saints and the Buccaneers. Both duels won Brees’ Saints. And Brees, who broke eleven ribs this season, will go into this game highly motivated. Because the playmaker recently signed a TV contract as an expert and not a few suspect that it could be Brees’ last season, which he naturally wants to crown with his second victory in the Super Bowl.

These are the other games in the Divisional Round:

NFL Playoffs 2021: Green Bay Packers vs. Los Angeles Rams (Saturday, 10:35 p.m. /Prosieben, DAZN)

The prerequisites for this game could hardly be more exciting: The best offensive in the league for the most valuable player of the season, Green Bay’s quarterback Aaron Rodgers, receives the best defensive in the NFL. While the Rams defeated the Seattle Seahawks 30:20 last week, the Green Bay Packers, the second best team, had no play after the regular season and are rested in their first playoff game.

Likes the cold in Wisconsin: Aaron Rodgers, quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.

Two duels will be particularly important: Will the Los Angeles Rams manage to put pressure on Rodgers with their star defender Aaron Donald Packers? And: Will Rams defender Jalen Ramsey Rodgers’ favorite receiver Davante Adams be out of the game? The weather could also be decisive in this game: The Rams expect a temperature difference of around 30 degrees when they travel from sunny and warm California to icy Wisconsin. A duel on equal terms with slight advantages for the Green Bay Packers.

Divisional Round 2021: Buffalo Bills vs Baltimore Ravens (Sunday, 2.15 a.m. /Prosieben, DAZN)

With Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens) and Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills), two quarterbacks face each other who both like to run the ball themselves. That will also be important this week, especially since it can certainly snow in Buffalo. In the Ravens’ 20:13 win over the Tennessee Titans last week, the defense proved that it can defend the running game. Titans running back Derrick Henry, the best runner in the league, carried the ball just 2.2 yards per run – in the regular season it averaged 5.4 yards per run. The problem: Josh Allen can also throw the ball, and in Stefon Diggs he also has an outstanding pass recipient.

Want to move into the semifinals with his bills: Quarterback Josh Allen.

So it will mainly depend on whether the defense of the Bills can prevent Lamar Jackson’s running game. In the close 27:24 victory of the Bills in the wildcard round against the Indianapolis Colts, the defensive showed weaknesses. It is likely that little things will decide this game.

2021 NFL Playoffs: Kansas City Chiefs v Cleveland Browns (Sunday, 9:05 p.m. /Prosieben, DAZN)

With the Kansas City Chiefs, the best team of the regular season now intervenes in the playoffs. This is not the only reason why the reigning defending champions are the top favorites for another triumph in the Super Bowl. Coach Andy Reid and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes are a congenial duo who manage to decipher almost every defense. In addition, there is the home advantage and the great self-confidence after a record of 14 wins and two defeats in the regular season.

So are you all right in this game? The Cleveland Browns caused a big surprise last week when they beat the favored Pittsburgh Steelers 48:37. This weekend, several things will be important for the Browns: They have to be in possession of the ball for as long as possible so that Patrick Mahomes can watch on the sidelines. In addition, the Browns need a similar start to last week when they led 28-0 (!) Against the Steelers after the first quarter. And: In the two defeats of the Chiefs in the regular season, star receiver Tyreek Hill was taken out of the game by the defense. The Browns have to do that, too, to stand a chance. The win over the Steelers was a surprise, a win over the Chiefs would be a sensation.

Contrary to the usual routine, the NFL will not host any international games or games outside of the United States this year. The five scheduled international games in 2020, four in London and one in Mexico City, will not take place. The reason for this is the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Two home games at London’s Wembley Stadium should be played by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and two more games should take place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The hosts would have been the Atlanta Falcons and the Miami Dolphins. An Arizona Cardinals game was planned in Mexico City, the five opponents had not yet been determined.
