“Saint Augustine, journey of a Roman Berber”: Saint Augustine seen from Africa

It was by understanding, during a trip to North Africa in 2017, that Saint Augustine was not strictly speaking European, that the director Jean Dulon (author of an excellent Christians of Algeria in 2017) had the idea of this documentary on the roads taken, on foot or in a cart pulled by donkeys, by the author of Confessions and of The city of God.

For this shoot, the team accompanied a group of enthusiasts of the Bishop of Hippo guided by Dominique Martinet, founder of the Via Augustina association after having worked on the forty years of journeys (from 390 to 430) of Saint Augustine. . “If Augustine’s language, culture, and knowledge are Roman and Latin, his friends, family and ties are African, from the proconsular Africa of yesterday, Christian for nearly five centuries”, summarizes Dominique Martinet.

A precise geography

This documentary first takes us along the “Route of the Medjerda” of about 400 km, which starts from Annaba (Hippone) and goes to Souk Ahras (Thagaste), Augustin’s hometown, via the Roman sites of Chemtou, Bulla Regia and Membressa, to reach Carthage.

Then, along a path further south of about 500 km, starting from Annaba and passing through the city of Madaure (where Augustine did his grammar studies) and Tebessa, as well as the Roman sites of Haïdra, Lares and Dougga, before joining the imperial road to Carthage built for the Roman legions.

Through these roads and landscapes of today’s Algeria and Tunisia, the documentary evokes the theological (to combat the Donatist schism) and political (to correct the manners of the time) issues he faced the Bishop of Hippo. A clever documentary that sheds light on an unknown angle of one of the four fathers of the Western Church.
