Memphis Depay, the new Barcelona player, spoke for the first time after completing his transfer to the Blaugrana.
Barcelona announced on Saturday the signing of Memphis Depay on a free transfer, after the expiration of his contract with Lyon.
“The dream has come true, I joined the biggest team in the world,” Depay said in a video posted on his new club’s website.
“I am very excited to play in front of the great Barcelona fans, they love football so much,” added the player, who is in the Netherlands national team at Euro 2020.
“I would like to thank the Barcelona Board of Directors, the president of the club and the coach for all their efforts in finalizing the deal.”
He concluded, “I am ready for this challenge. I will do my best for this club.”
The club indicated in an official statement that the 27-year-old had agreed to join Barcelona for two seasons until the end of the 2022/2023 season in a free deal after the expiration of his contract with Lyon.
Depay participated with Lyon last season in 40 matches, during which he scored 22 goals and assisted 12 others.
Depay is Barcelona’s fourth deal in the current transfer season after signing Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia from Manchester City in free transfer deals as well, and Emerson’s return from Real Betis.
Depay began playing football with the youth team of Eindhoven and was promoted to the first team in 2012.
Depay continued for 3 seasons with the first team until he moved to Manchester United in 2015.
But he left after only a year and a half and moved to Lyon in January 2017.
He participated in 178 games with Lyon and scored 76 goals overall.
Depay is currently participating with the Netherlands national team in Euro 2020, and led the team to victory in the first two rounds of the group stage and scored in the last match against Austria with a penalty kick.
The Netherlands team leads the third group after achieving the full mark and obtaining 6 points from two matches.
