The Pope: Jesus’ prayer is the model for our prayer

“In the midst of the drama, in the excruciating pain of soul and body, Jesus prays with the words of the psalms; with the poor of the world, especially those forgotten by all”, Francis said in his last catechesis on the theme of prayer.

Mariangela Jaguraba –Vatican News

“The paschal prayer of Jesus for us” was the theme of the catechesis of Pope Francis at the General Audience this Wednesday (16/06), held in Patio São Damaso.

“Prayer is one of the most striking characteristics of Jesus’ life. Jesus prayed, and he prayed a lot. In the course of his mission, Jesus immersed himself in prayer, for dialogue with the Father was the glowing nucleus of his entire existence” , stressed Francis, stressing that “the Gospels testify that Jesus’ prayer became even more intense and dense at the time of his passion and death”.

A total, messianic salvation

In fact, these culminating events constitute the heart of Christian preaching, the kerygma: the last hours lived by Jesus in Jerusalem are the heart of the Gospel not only because the Evangelists devote a proportionately greater space to this narration, but also because the event of his death and resurrection – like lightning – sheds light on all the rest of Jesus’ vicissitude. He was not a philanthropist who took care of human suffering and disease. He was that and more. In him there is not only goodness: there is salvation, not an episodic salvation – the one that saves me from illness or a moment of discouragement – but a total, messianic salvation, which gives hope in the definitive victory of life over death.

In the days of his last Easter we find Jesus totally immersed in prayer. “He prays dramatically in the Garden of Gethsemane, stricken by mortal anguish. Yet at that very moment Jesus turns to God, calling him “Abbá”, Father. This Aramaic word, the language of Jesus, expresses intimacy and trust. When he feels the darkness gathering around him, Jesus crosses them with that little word: Abba! Father“, stressed the Pope.

Everything is prayer in the three hours of the Cross

“Jesus also prays on the cross, enveloped in the dark silence of God. However, on his lips, once again, the word “Father” comes up. It is the most audacious prayer, because on the cross Jesus is the absolute intercessor: he prays for others, by all, even by those who condemn him, with no one, except a poor malefactor, declaring himself in his favor. All were against him, or indifferent, only the malefactor recognizes the power. «Father, forgive them, for they know not What are you doing”.” Then Francisco added:

In the midst of the drama, in the excruciating pain of soul and body, Jesus prays with the words of the psalms; with the poor of the world, especially those forgotten by everyone, he utters the tragic words of Psalm 22: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” He felt the abandonment and prayed. On the Cross, the gift of the Father, who offers love, is fulfilled, that is, our salvation is fulfilled. Everything is prayer in the three hours of the Cross. Jesus prays in the decisive hours of the Passion and of death. With the resurrection, the Father will answer your prayer. Jesus’ prayer is intense, Jesus’ prayer is unique, and it becomes the model of our prayer.

Jesus’ prayer is with us

The Pope reiterated that Jesus “prayed for me, for each one of us. Each of us can say that Jesus on the cross prayed for me. He prayed! Jesus can tell each of us that he prayed for me at the Last Supper and on the tree of the cross. Even in the most painful of suffering we are not alone, the prayer of Jesus is with us.

According to the Pontiff, the most beautiful aspect to remember, at the conclusion of this cycle of catechesis dedicated to the theme of prayer, is “the grace that we not only implore, but that, as it were, we were “begged”, we are already welcomed in the dialogue of Jesus with the Father, in the communion of the Holy Spirit”. “We were loved in Christ Jesus, and also at the time of the Passion, Death and Resurrection, everything was offered to us. And so, with prayer and with life, we must have courage, hope and with this courage and hope we must feel strongly the prayer of Jesus and move forward”, concluded the Pope, granting everyone his apostolic blessing.

The Pope at the Corpus Christi Mass: God’s thirst brings us to the altar

“In order to celebrate the Eucharist, it is first necessary to recognize our own thirst for God. The current drama is that thirst has often been exhausted. Questions about God have been quenched, the yearning for Him has slackened. God no longer attracts, because he already has we are not aware of our deep thirst,” Francis said in his homily.

Mariangela Jaguraba –Vatican News

Pope Francis presided at the Eucharist on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, celebrated in Italy and in other parts of the world, in St. Peter’s Basilica, this Sunday afternoon (06/06).

“Jesus tells his disciples to prepare the place to celebrate the Passover supper. They were the ones who asked: Master, “where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” As we contemplate and adore the presence of the Lord in the Eucharistic Bread, we too are called to ask ourselves: In what “place” do we want to prepare the Lord’s Passover? What are the “places” in our life where God asks us to host him? ” asked the Pope in his homily, using three images from the Gospel to answer these questions.

Only God satisfies our thirst

The first is the image of the man who brings a pitcher of water. That man, “completely anonymous, serves as a guide for the disciples in their search for the place that will later be called the Upper Room”.

The water jug is the sign of recognition: a sign that makes one think of thirsty humanity, always looking for a source of water to quench their thirst and restore it. We all walk in life with a jar in our hands: we are thirsty for love, for joy, for a successful life in a more human world. And for this thirst, the water of worldly things is not enough, for it is a deeper thirst that only God can satisfy.

“In order to celebrate the Eucharist, it is first necessary to recognize our own thirst for God. The current drama is that thirst has often been exhausted. Questions about God have been quenched, the yearning for Him has slackened. God no longer attracts, because he already has we are not aware of our deep thirst. It is God’s thirst that brings us to the altar. If thirst is lacking, our celebrations become arid. Thus, as a Church, we cannot be content with the small group of those who habitually they gather to celebrate the Eucharist; we must go through the city, meet people, learn to recognize and awaken the thirst for God and the longing for the Gospel,” the Pontiff said.

Get out of the little room of our self

The second image is of the large room upstairs. It is there that Jesus and his family will have the Passover supper and this room is in the house of the person who hosts them.

Only God satisfies our deep thirst

“A big room for a small piece of bread. God makes himself small as a piece of bread and, for that very reason, it takes a big heart to be able to recognize, adore and welcome him. The presence of God is so humble, hidden , sometimes invisible, that needs a prepared, awake and welcoming heart to be recognized. If instead of a large room, our heart resembles a curtain where we sadly keep the old things; we have long sent our enthusiasm and our dreams; if it resembles a cramped and dark room, because we live only on ourselves, our problems and bitterness, then it will be impossible to recognize this silent and humble presence of God,” said the Pope, adding:

Serves a large room. It is necessary to enlarge the heart. We need to get out of the little room of our self and into the great space of enchantment and adoration. This is the procedure before the Eucharist, we need this: adoration. The Church itself must be a big room. Not a restricted and closed circle, but a Community with open arms, welcoming to all.

In the Eucharist we contemplate the God of love

Finally, the image of Jesus breaking the Bread. “It is the Eucharistic gesture par excellence, the gesture identifying our faith, the place of our encounter with the Lord who offers himself to make us reborn to a new life. This gesture is disconcerting: until then, lambs were sacrificed to be sacrificed. offering in sacrifice to God, now it is Jesus who becomes a lamb and immolates himself to give us life. In the Eucharist, we contemplate and adore the God of love. It is the Lord who does not divide anyone, but divides himself. the Lord who does not demand sacrifices, but sacrifices himself. It is the Lord who asks for nothing, but gives everything.”

To celebrate and live the Eucharist, we too are called to live this love. Because you cannot break Sunday Bread if your heart is closed to brothers. You cannot eat this Bread if you do not give bread to the hungry. You cannot share this Bread if you do not share the sufferings of those in need. After all, including our solemn Eucharistic liturgies, only love will remain. And, even now, our Eucharists transform the world, insofar as we allow ourselves to be transformed by becoming broken bread for others.

“The procession with the Blessed Sacrament, characteristic of the feast of Corpus Christi, but which we cannot yet perform, reminds us that we are called to leave with Jesus. To leave with enthusiasm, taking Christ to those we meet in daily life. a Church with a pitcher in hand, which awakens thirst and carries water. Let us open our hearts lovingly, to be the spacious and welcoming room where everyone can enter to meet the Lord. Let us share our lives in compassion and solidarity, to may the world see, through us, the greatness of God’s love”, concluded the Pope.

Reflection on Holy Trinity Sunday

“Therefore, go and make disciples of mine all peoples, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you! ”

Father Cesar Augusto, SJ – Vatican News

We have come to the day when God is celebrated in a special way, God who is celebrated daily!

In the first reading, extracted from the book of Deuteronomy 4, 32-34.39-40, it tells us about the privilege of having the Most High as God, of being very dear to Him and receiving guidance for living well and being happy!

We too, inhabitants of our cities, of our countries, of our lands, since children are taught that we were created out of love, that we have a God who loves us and died for us on a cross and left us criteria for living well and being happy and make other people happy too. In the so-called Old Testament, we had the delivery of the Decalogue, the ten commandments given by God to Moses, not only for the Jewish People, but for everyone who wanted to act according to Justice; Jesus Christ, God Incarnate, later brings this orientation towards happiness to the fullness, by giving us the Beatitudes and the synthesis: loving God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves.

All of this is found in the second reading, Romans 8, 14-17 when Paul says: “all those who allow themselves to be led by the Spirit of God are children of God. In fact … you have received a spirit of adopted children, in which we all cry out: Abba, O Father. ”

And examples are given to us every day when the religious calendar presents us with the Holy Day. They are people like us, flesh and blood, as they like to say; people who, at an important moment in their lives, if not, from the beginning, decided to live fully the divine counsels. That is why they are called venerable, blessed, saints. They lived happiness, even in extremely difficult situations, but they never lost serenity, peace and were lights for their companions on the journey. They were chosen to be signs, witnesses of God in the midst of a difficult generation, as we too live. They did not reject the grace of God, which they never lacked. They may have reached the limit, but they trusted the Most High and were men and women, elderly, mature, young and children, rich and poor, educated and illiterate, married or not, of all races, who thought it was wiser to follow God than human norms and conventions.

And Paul continues “if we really suffer with him, it is to be glorified with him as well.”

The Gospel, taken from Matthew 28, 16-20, brings us to the grand scene of the missionary sending of the eleven disciples and the mandate of “Therefore, go and make disciples of mine all peoples, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you! ”We all deprive ourselves of the trust of Jesus Christ and have an order: to evangelize all peoples, to baptize them and to guide them in the activities of daily life and of life in general. But the great wonder comes at the end, when the Lord says to them and to us: “Behold, I will be with you every day, until the end of the world.” We are not alone, God is with us, he is Emmanuel, God with us! Maria, too, when she sees the Diogo Indian frightened, does not say: “I am not here, am I not your mother?” Therefore, courage, in the midst of the vicissitudes of the journey, we must know that we are not alone, God is with us, in addition to the maternal presence of the compassionate, Mary, our Mother, when, at Calvary, the Incarnate Word entrusted us to her, His Mother.

We are happy! We have our God as Father, Redeemer and Comforter!

Walmart and Starbucks say goodbye to face masks … in the United States – El Financiero

Walmart reported that its fully vaccinated staff and customers can now leave their masks at home, a decision that could influence how other companies respond to the latest government guidelines.

Starbucks also eliminated the mask requirement for vaccinated customers as of May 17, while it will continue to require staff to wear face covers.

Walt Disney World Resort made masks optional in outdoor common areas, though they are still required indoors, at all attractions, theaters, and transportation.

Walmart, the largest private employer in the United States, said fully vaccinated staff will not need to wear the mask at work starting May 18, the same day it will report its results for the first quarter of 2021.

The rule applies to all of your Walmart and Sam’s Club locations, distribution centers, and offices in the United States. Vaccinated customers can also shop without covering their faces as of Friday, although some local regulations may still require masks, Walmart executives said in a memo.

The move by the world’s largest retailer marks a significant step toward a return to normalcy in American life, and could set an example for the industry.

Retailers have largely required face masks for shoppers and employees over the past year, leading to occasional clashes with uncooperative customers.

But Apple, Target, and other retailers have yet to relax their requirements on face masks, creating a confusing environment for shoppers and employees alike.

Costco and Trader Joe’s also said Friday that they were eliminating face mask requirements for shoppers. These retailers will not require proof that customers have been vaccinated. Rather, they expect customers to be responsible and cooperative, while remembering to wear face covers in towns and cities that still have face mask mandates.

Apple informed its US retail stores that the order for face masks and other procedures related to Covid-19 remains in effect, although the iPhone maker says it continues to evaluate health and safety measures.

All of their retail stores have required the use of this protection during the pandemic, and some locations have operated on a limited basis, for example, by appointment only.

Several companies are also revising their face mask policies after Thursday’s announcement from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that people who are fully vaccinated do not have to wear face masks indoors and they don’t have to keep their distance from others.

Target and Home Depot have decided not to adjust their mask requirements for now. Rite Aid said its policy is still in effect pending state and local rules.

Even with its policy easing, Trader Joe’s will continue to require its employees to wear face masks, a spokeswoman said. At Costco, customers will still have to wear face covers in their pharmacy and optical departments, the company said in a statement.

Walmart also said it would give $ 75 to each employee who gets vaccinated, following companies like Kroger, German grocery store Lidl and Instacart, which have given cash for vaccination vouchers. Other companies have given paid time off to get vaccinated.
