Brazilian minister defends that Robinho has to go to prison. At issue is a case of violation.
The Brazilian Minister of Women, Family and Human Rights, Damares Alves, defended that the Brazilian player Robinho, convicted in Italy for sexual violence, go to jail “immediately”.
“Jail immediately, I have no other word to say. There is still appeal, but the leakage of audios … What else do you want? Jail. No rapist can be applauded. He wants to go back to the field to pose as a hero,” he said. the minister to the press in Brasilia, indignant about the matter.
Last week, Robinho, a former Real Madrid, Manchester City and AC Milan player, saw his signing for Santos, the Brazilian club where he graduated, be suspended after pressure from the sponsors due to his nine-year prison sentence against him .
The 36-year-old Brazilian international veteran was sentenced in 2017 to nine years in prison by a Milan court for his alleged involvement in a collective sexual rape against a 23-year-old girl of Albanian origin. The support crime took place in 2013 in a nightclub in the Italian city. Robinho guarantees that he is innocent and that the sex was consensual with the woman.
Despite these problems with the courts, Santos announced on the 10th of April that Robinho would return for a symbolic salary, which generated a wave of criticism and the threat of several of his sponsors, who subsequently forced the club’s management to cancel the hiring.
Minister Damares, who is an evangelical pastor and also a victim of sexual rape as a child, praised Santos’ decision to terminate the contract with the athlete.
“This is a crime that deserves no consideration for the abuser, the rapist. (…) He has to serve the sentence that is established, either there or here, immediately,” added Damares Alves.
In the midst of all the controversy, the GloboEsporte portal published the transcripts of the telephone conversations that the Italian court used to condemn Robinho, in which the footballer said he did not “care” for the situation, because “the woman was completely drunk “.
“The feeling that that (transcription of the audios) caused me was nausea, I felt like throwing up. It was fatal to read what I read from a player of that dimension”, stressed the minister.
However, the sentence issued by the Italian court is not final and can be appealed, so Robinho still cannot be arrested.
The Federal Constitution also prohibits the extradition of Brazilians born in the South American country, although, eventually, the authorities of both countries may reach an agreement to serve the sentence in Brazilian territory.
