In line with the current gaming hardware, a new chapter will soon be heralded with the software. Trailers and demos show the Unreal Engine 5.
The trailer for the Early Access of Unreal Engine 5.
Since last fall, there has been a small paradigm shift in both the world of consoles and graphics cards. Despite persistently poor availability, the next-gen consoles and GPUs represent a major leap in gaming hardware. With the upcoming Unreal Engine 5, this step should also happen on the software side.
True to the name, a scene designed in this tool can hardly be distinguished from reality. This is already demonstrated by a YouTube video of a purely digital apartment. For such impressive presentations, however, you also need correspondingly powerful hardware.
A demonstration of the graphical ability of the Unreal Engine 5.
According to “GameStar”, graphics cards from the RTX 2000 series from Nvidia or AMD’s Radeon 5000 models are recommended. At least 32 gigabytes of RAM are required, although more is certainly better.
There is already a short list of confirmed games that will use the new Unreal Engine. These include, for example, the upcoming Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 or Fortnite. Incidentally, a free early access version of the tool is already available in the Epic Games Store.
As with its predecessor, commercial use will only incur costs from a turnover of one million US dollars. In private, the Unreal Engine should remain free of charge in the next generation. A release of Unreal Engine 5 is expected in the course of 2022.
After months of sluggish availability, the prices of graphics cards have been falling continuously for weeks. If you are looking for a model suitable for gaming, you will find it from 240 euros. This means that graphics cards are far from being recommended by AMD and Nvidia, but the light at the end of the tunnel is brighter.
The GeForce GTX 1650, for example, with a price tag from 240 euros – occasionally also 200 euros – is suitable as a transitional model for 1080p gaming until faster graphics cards become cheaper. A year ago, GTX 1650 models cost around 150 euros, a few weeks ago nothing went below 300 euros. The faster sister, the GeForce GTX 1660 Super, is not worth it with price tags from 400 euros, as the speed advantage is too low. Interested parties can use the GeForce RTX 2060 from around 450 euros.
A decent performance increase of around 25 percent over the 2060 model is obtained with the GeForce RTX 3060, for which interested parties who do not want to wait much longer should keep an eye out for offers: Most listings only start at 570 euros, and a few dealers sell corresponding ones Manufacturer cards but also from 500 euros.
In the upper middle class, the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is the most attractive model in the Nvidia camp from around 830 euros (although in principle it is much too expensive). The slower GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and GeForce RTX 3070 are hardly cheaper. All models from the GeForce RTX 3080, on the other hand, are significantly more expensive – it starts at 1300 euros.
AMD’s current RDNA2 series starts with the Radeon RX 6700 XT for 740 euros. All faster AMD graphics cards cost at least around 1000 euros, but with smaller gaps between the models. The Radeon RX 6800 XT, for example, is available from 1100 euros.
Tip: Both AMD and Nvidia sell their current reference designs from time to time via their own websites at the respective price recommendations. However, interested parties have to be lucky and strike at the right time – and then hope that the websites won’t give in under the load.
Meanwhile, miners are switching off more and more graphics cards that were previously used to mine Ethereum. Since the all-time high in mid-May, the computing power in the network has fallen by a quarter to around 488 terahashes per second. Aside from the global shortage of semiconductors and components, the demand from mining farms is particularly important as a price driver for graphics cards.
Recently, the prices of cryptocurrencies collapsed. Ethereum, for example, fell from more than 3,500 euros to around half. At the same time, the interest of miners should decrease, as the responsible Ethereum Foundation wants to switch to a proof-of-stake model without mining.
