Caleb Ewan wants to win in Giro, Tour and Vuelta this year

With races in his native Australia suspended and enormous travel difficulties, Caleb Ewan (Lotto) is in Europe. The 26-year-old sprinter has completed the first part of the preseason at his residence in Monaco and from now on he will work with the rest of his teammates, who these days train in three separate bubbles on the Levantine coast. Perhaps this change in plans has inspired the little sprinter (1.65 meters) to devise a bold plan for the season: “I want to win in Giro, Tour and Vuelta this year.”

Ewan is probably the number one sprint right now and that allows him to take on such a difficult challenge. Only three riders have managed to win in the three great tours in the same year in all history: Miguel Poblet (1956), Pierino Baffi (1958) and Alessandro Petacchi (2003).

The Australian runner already knows victory in the three rounds of three weeks. He has five stages in the Giro and Tour and one in the Vuelta, where he opened his account in 2015. Ewan knows that the challenge is very complicated and has explained that he will modulate it depending on whether or not he obtains the desired results: «If I win in the Giro , I will continue with the Tour and then I will do the same with the Vuelta. But if I do not achieve victory in the Giro, I will not go to the Vuelta “, he advanced in ‘Cyclingpro’.

Another goal he sets for himself is the Tour green jersey, which he has never managed to wear in Paris. For this reason, he makes it clear that if he has already won before, he will choose “not to reach the end of the Giro” and thus save himself the very hard last week of the corsa rosa.

Three precedents

If Ewan won the Giro, Tour and Vuelta in the same year, he would achieve a remarkable feat, but it is difficult to imagine that he can achieve it to the extent that the three men who have already achieved it so far did.

The one with the worst record was Pierino Baffi. The Lombard cyclist, a partner of Fiorenzo Magni, scored a stage in the Giro in 1958, three in the Tour and two in the Vuelta. ‘Only’ six victories, which did not exceed those achieved by Miguel Poblet two years before. The Barcelona, double winner of the Milan-San Remo, had prevailed in 1956 in four arrivals of the Giro, one of the Tour and three of the Vuelta. Eight incredible victories that would be surpassed by Alessandro Petacchi in 2003, with six stages of the Giro, four of the Tour and five of the Vuelta, to reach 15.

Ewan has a contract with his current formation until 2022, as well as the two henchmen of his ‘train’, Roger Kluge and Jasper De Buyst.

Netflix series “The Alienist”: In the slaughterhouses of the Belle Epoque

In his first American series, Daniel Brühl is a soul doctor during the dawn of psychoanalysis. At that time, of course, instead of a “psychiatrist”, he was called “alienist”, both disparagingly and suspiciously, because he felt after the alienated, insane souls.

Set in a New York resurrected in Budapest around 1890 from gutter and golden salons, the series is optically opulent and designed with attention to detail between “Gangs of New York” and “Time of Innocence”. In addition, Dakota Fanning, who has been playing since her childhood, as his often sleepy-looking police secretary, and the broken handsome Luke Evans as an illustrator from a rich family, who then becomes a “Times” reporter.

Actually, the ten-part US series “The Alienist”, which was produced for TNT and then also taken over by Netflix and based on the well-researched novel “Die Einkreisung” by Caleb Carr, which was published in 1994, had what it takes to become a solid series hit. But somehow it didn’t really work when the first season was broadcast in 2018.

The main criticism was that you don’t get warm with the characters. Nevertheless, there is now another season, recently also available on Netflix. This time, Carr’s second and last novel about the Hungarian doctor Laszlo Kreizler was filmed: “Angel of Darkness”.

A third novel, which takes up the material, takes place in 2016; There is talk of a sequel and a prequel, but no page has been published yet. So, at the end of the day, a doctor who has just fallen in love and a kindred psycho-plumber goes to Vienna to get the higher dream interpretations from Professor Freud.

Doctor Kreizler gets them all

Before that, however, he is on the bloody heels of a traumatized child murderer, played by Rosy McEwen with a never-ending energy of death as a perfidious, fascinating, white-skinned and red-haired innocence, a battered girl and mother’s soul and ice-cold killer.

This time she is the cold and dangerous focus, because she initially deceives everyone: Daniel Brühl’s gentle, deliberate, slow-talking, but then quickly combining Doctor Kreizler, Dakota Fanning’s sensitive investigative strategies, Luke Evans’ chivalrously chevaleresque higher son, who is in the baby rompers of her future Forensic science brethren Lucius and Marcus Isaacson, the Jewish forensic scientist.

The contemporary historical panorama is clearly expanded after the stick boy murders of the first season in the only eight-part, more tightly narrated “Angel of Darkness”, and with it the subject matter.

“We knew that if everything went well, we could win today. I still had enough in my legs to do the sprint. I had to find the right trajectory to gain speed “, welcomed the winner of the day.

Cousin’s Adventure

The stage was essentially reduced to its final and to the long adventure of Jérôme Cousin, who started at the front from the start of the race with two other Frenchmen, Anthony Pérez and Benoît Cosnefroy in the fight for the jersey. polka dot best climber.

This three-way run, troubled by a thunderstorm, turned into a solitary escape after 70 kilometers and obtaining points in the first two coasts listed by Pérez to the detriment of Cosnefroy. The two then let Cousin scout, for a long outing on the Napoleon road once taken by the Emperor on his return from Elba Island.

Cousin, however, was not disoriented. After confinement due to the pandemic, the rider of the Total Direct Energie team of Jean-René Bernaudeau had taken a cycling trip of more than a week, in the south of Portugal, while sleeping with the locals.

This time, in the totally unbalanced match that opposed him to the peloton, Cousin was unable to redo the coup of Paris-Nice 2018. In Sisteron (already!), He had successfully completed a breakaway in the company of the German Nils Politt. The « solo » de Cousin ended 16 kilometers from the finish, before the sprinters’ teams took action.

For his part, Pérez, on the way to seize the polka-dot jersey, was unable to reach the city of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. The Aixois was forced to retire after a fall due to a collision with a team car which had braked in front of him, according to his Cofidis training. Rib fractured with possible pneumothorax according to a first diagnosis, he was transported to the hospital of Digne-les-Bains. The fourth stage, 160.5 kilometers long between Sisteron and Orcières-Merlette (Hautes-Alpes), marks the first arrival at the top of the event.
