If you grew up in the ’90s, you might not hear “bone health” except that it is associated with those who had milk?
And while it’s true that the calcium in milk is an important building block for bones, it’s not the only thing that matters when it comes to bone health.
Plus, milk isn’t necessarily the best way to consume calcium.
Vegetables like kale and broccoli all have higher levels of calcium absorption than milk.
If you want to sip something good for your bones, put down the kettle and sip yourself a cup (or four) of tea, according to wellandgood.
Tea for bone health
“The main bone benefits of drinking tea are due to the powerful antioxidants such as polyphenols, catechins, and flavonoids,” says Su Xiaoyu, clinical dietitian and registered dietitian at the Hospital of Surgery.
The powerful polyphenols found in tea have been shown to help increase bone mineralization, delay the reduction of bone mineral density, and increase vitamin D levels in the body. The body’s bone-building cells, while flavonoids have estrogen-like properties that help prevent bone loss.
In order to reap these benefits, drink black or green tea, as these are the types of tea that have been covered in most studies on tea and bone health.
Black and green teas are also recommended because they are the most consumed in the world, and it doesn’t really matter if you take your tea hot or iced;
Keep in mind that tea is excellent for maintaining many other bodily functions (other than bone health) as we age.
It’s good for your heart, brain, focus, and even your mood. Green and black tea are high in flavanols, a type of antioxidant. These flavanols have been linked to lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, also known as “bad” cholesterol, plus it can reduce the risk of heart disease
The catechins in tea also help protect the body from free radicals, and this benefits the whole body and of course the brain.
Researchers say they believe this is related to caffeine, calmness and focus. There are many unique components of the tea, which make it a great brain-boosting drink.
How much tea should be taken?
Bone health research studies generally recommend one to four cups of tea per day.
Just remember that drinking tea is just one component of healthy bones, and there are many other nutrients that are just as important as bone health.
They include calcium, vitamin D, magnesium and vitamin K, for example it is essential to allow a balanced diet that includes a variety of different foods and food groups to obtain adequate nutrients to support bone health.
