  • Stefan Rogentin made his breakthrough this season.

  • With places five and seven, he is one of the better Super-G riders in the World Cup.

  • His family is also behind his career. One tries to minimize the contacts because of Corona.

Places 17, 28, 28, 22, 28, 24 were places for Stefan Rogentin last season in the Super-G World Cup. Rogentin was consistently outside the top 20 in the world. This season everything is suddenly different. In the four Super-Gs he has driven so far, the 26-year-old has placed in the top 15 three times. In the last one in Bormio he even finished fifth. The Grisons shows an explosion of performance this winter and even made the Olympic limit.

He himself finds it difficult to assess why that is, as he says in an interview with 20 Minuten: “I don’t do much differently. You can’t explain it, that’s the crazy thing. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.” One explanation could be that since this season he has joined the downhill group around Beat Feuz and Niels Hintermann belongs. Of course, the 26-year-old can benefit from the top downhillers. “You can learn a slice from everyone. It’s not explicitly one.”

Low risk of infection in the family

When asked if he’s looking forward to the Olympics, Rogentin replies: “I’ve got the qualifications in the bag, but I’m not there yet. You don’t know until the end, the competition in the team is fierce. There are also hurdles in the area of the corona pandemic. » Indeed, an infection would be devastating for Rogentin at the moment. At Swiss-Ski, the athletes are protected with single rooms, masks and little contact with people. “It’s a bit lonely,” says the driver from Graubünden, but he immediately adds: “We’re still doing well compared to others.”

Rogentin now has three speed races in front of a home crowd on the program in Wengen. However, family and friends will not be there: «My environment is currently very reserved and minimizes contactsThe reason is also that Rogentin can come home after the races and there is only a small risk of infection.

Strong training times on the Lauberhorn

Although his environment is not on site, the Grisons, who has been studying alongside his skiing career since 2018, is full of anticipation for the competitions in Wengen. Especially the Super-G on Thursday. “I am very excited about it. It’s a competition that nobody has driven before.” The two training results on the Lauberhorn downhill also show that he is in good shape. On Tuesday he finished second, on Wednesday he ended up eighth.

For “Rogi”, however, it is clear that these placements do not say much, as he explains: “It’s nice when the training is going well. But you always have to treat them with caution. The drivers often don’t quite take the risk.” This was also the case with the 26-year-old: “In some places I drove like in the race, but not everywhere to save energy.” One thing is clear, however, based on the season’s performances so far: Rogentin will be a force to be reckoned with at the Lauberhorn.

In the second practice session for the Lauberhorn downhill, three Swiss ranked in the top 10. Niels Hintermann was listed as the best Swiss in fifth place. Stefan Rogentin followed in eighth place and Marco Odermatt came in tenth. The Adelboden winner improved by 35 places compared to his first appearance on the Lauberhorn.
