SIC News | Ban on single-use plastic expected to take effect in July

The ban on plastic for single use in Portugal should start next month. According to the Público newspaper, the decree-law is under public discussion, but should only enter into force on 1 July.

If you go forward, plates, cutlery, straws and cotton swabs can no longer enter the market.

In restaurants and public transport, the availability and use of these products is also prohibited, but only from September of next year.

For now, drinking cups or food containers intended for immediate consumption are left out. But the Government intends that, by the end of 2026, there will be a 30% reduction in the consumption of these products, a figure that should reach 50% by the end of 2030.
