Senegal: Ousmane Sonko will make an important statement at 9:00 p.m.

PASTEF President Ousmane Sonko will make an important statement on May 9 at 9:00 p.m. His release follows his conviction in a meaningless remote-controlled trial.

The appeal trial this May 08, 2023 in Senegal against the fierce opponent of the Macky Sall regime has delivered its verdict. Ousmane Sonko is sentenced and ordered to pay 200 million CFA francs in damages for defamation against Minister Mame Mbaye Niang. The major issue in this trial was the question of the ineligibility of Ousmane Sonko. Defense lawyers, including Me Ciré Clédor Ly, were present in the room, but in the absence of their client, they were not allowed to speak.

The case concerns charges of forgery, insult and defamation brought against Sonko following remarks made during a press conference. He then commented on a report incriminating Minister Mame Mbaye Niang for alleged acts of corruption. The minister filed a complaint against Sonko, who defended himself by saying that he only commented on a document that had already been made public.

The Court of Appeal partially overturned the judgment at first instance. He sentenced Ousmane Sonko to six months suspended for the delays of public insults and defamation. He confirmed the damages and fixed the constraint per body at the maximum.
