The reason for the study was data on neurological complications in coronavirus survivors. Scientists have concluded that in some cases, the infection can lead to neurological signs characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease.

A group of scientists from the American clinic of Cleveland presented the results of a study, from which it follows that coronavirus infection can cause brain damage similar to Alzheimer’s. This was reported by the clinic’s press service. A preprint of the work was published in the journal Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy.
The reason for the study was the increasing reports of neurological complications in patients who have recovered from COVID-19. Symptoms persisted for a long time after recovery.
The study authors used artificial intelligence to find the link between the genes and proteins of coronavirus carriers and the genes and proteins of patients suffering from several neurological diseases. The scientists also analyzed the genetic factors that allow the SARS-CoV-2 virus to infect brain cells.
American doctors managed to find a close connection between the brain cells affected by the coronavirus and the brain cells of people with dementia. “We found that SARS-CoV-2 infection significantly altered the markers of Alzheimer’s disease involved in brain inflammation,” said research team leader Dr. Feixiong Cheng.
The authors of the work concluded that in some cases, coronavirus infection can lead to dementia and other neurological signs characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease.
