Replacement for injured Polter
The former Nuremberg Michael Frey (28) is apparently in the focus of Schalke 04. The Belgian newspaper “The Last Hour/Sportsreport that the Royal Blues are interested in the Royal Antwerp striker. Schalke is said to have already made contact. Although Frey has a contract with Antwerp that runs until 2024, he wants to leave the club – the reason for this is his short playing time compared to the previous season.
While the Swiss was seeded last season and played 46 games in which he contributed 24 goals and four assists, he is currently oscillating between the starting XI and the bench – to date he has accumulated 997 minutes in 23 games (nine goals). After losing the cup game against KRC Genk (2:3) last week, he recently announced his departure. “That was Michael Frey’s last game,” he told fans on the way to the team bus. However, the “Nieuwsblad” reported that Antwerpen does not want to give up Frey at the moment because the Dutch international Vincent Janssen (28) is the only other regular center forward in the squad. Frey was not considered for Sunday’s away game at Union SG (0:2).
Schalke coach Thomas Reis can only fall back on two real nines in Simon Terodde (34) and Kenan Karaman (28) because Sebastian Polter (31) recently injured his knee and is in danger of being out for a long time. Sport director Peter Knäbel had already indicated that Schalke might sign a replacement: “I can’t imagine a game in our arena without a typical ‘nine’. In terms of sport, that’s my preferred variant, and just for the feeling – a real snap, that’s part of it for me.” With a market value of 4.5 million euros, Frey would become the most valuable striker at S04 – anyway there are only two professionals higher in the squad taxed.
Frey came to Antwerp from Fenerbahce in the summer of 2021 for €2m, making him one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history. According to the report, several Belgian clubs have thought about signing Frey, but have rejected the idea because the striker is said to be too expensive. Word is the rest of the Jupiler Pro League can’t afford Frey’s salary. In addition to Schalke, AEK Athens and Venezia FC are said to be interested.
