The vaccination skepticism in the Russian population is inhibiting the immunization campaign. There were more than 24,700 new infections on Tuesday.
In Russia, the number of corona deaths recorded daily has risen to another record high. As the authorities announced on Tuesday, 780 deaths related to the corona virus were registered within 24 hours. It is the sixth time since the beginning of July that a new record number of corona deaths has been recorded in Russia. However, some experts say the official information on corona deaths is too low.
For example, only those deaths are counted for which the coronavirus can be proven to be the primary cause of death. The highly contagious Delta variant of the virus is currently spreading rapidly in Russia. 24,702 new cases of infection were recorded on Tuesday. That was about the same as the previous days. According to official statistics, there have been more than 5.8 million infections and almost 144,500 deaths in Russia since the beginning of the pandemic.
Fight against pandemic
The fight against the pandemic is made more difficult for the Russian authorities by the widespread skepticism about corona vaccinations among the population. President Vladimir Putin recently appealed to citizens to “listen to the experts” instead of rumors. According to the website “Gogow”, which is gathering data from the Russian regions in the face of a lack of nationwide statistics, only 13 percent of the country’s 146 million residents were fully vaccinated against the corona virus by Tuesday. According to a poll published last week, 54 percent of citizens do not want to be vaccinated. However, the Kremlin rejects a general compulsory vaccination.
Russia was the first country in the world to approve a vaccine: the Sputnik-V preparation it had developed itself initially met with major international reservations due to the urgent approval process. The approval in the EU is still pending.
Sputnik V is also used in India
Russia has now signed an agreement to manufacture 300 million doses of the Sputnik vaccine per year in India. The vaccination doses are to be manufactured by the Indian Serum Institute (SII). The first batch should be delivered next September, announced the Russian state fund RDIF.
Sputnik V has been used in India since May. The Indian authorities had given the vaccine emergency approval. According to RDIF boss Kirill Dmitriev, the batches produced by SII are to be inoculated not only in India, but also in other countries.
