According to new rumors, Sony would like to acquire Square Enix.
That reports Greg Miller on the PS I Love You show (via Forbes). Miller says he heard that Sony is trying to buy the Japanese publisher. It is unclear what phase the acquisition is in and whether it can go ahead at all, and Miller indicates that we should take the rumors with a grain of salt.
Square Enix made headlines last week after it sold multiple studios and IPs to Embracer Group. Embracer Group deposits $300 million for Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal. With that, IPs such as Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain are no longer in Square’s hands. Soon there were voices that Square Enix was selling these studios to make it more attractive for a possible takeover.
It is not the first time that Sony and Square Enix have been linked. Gamesbeat journalist Jeff Grubb previously reported a rumor about Sony and the Japanese developer. “Okay, I’ve said this a thousand times but there’s always someone who hears it for the first time: we never get enough information about acquisitions to report it with any certainty. Sony buying Square Enix was the big rumor but I can don’t confirm that,” he tweeted.
Nothing has been officially announced by Sony or Square Enix yet.
