Kansas, number 4, won its third Maui invitational title Wednesday night by dismissing Dayton from a 90-84 overtime thriller. The Jayhawks earned a combined 60 points for their two stars – Devon Dotson with a career high of 31 and Udoka Azubuike with a career high of 29 – to get away from the late Flyers. Azubuike, 7-foot, scored nine of KU's 17 points in overtime before escaping. It's the second time in five years that Kansas has won the Maui Invitational. He defeated Chaminade, BYU and Dayton en route to the title.
Kansas seemed about to prevail in the regulation on the Flyers, but Dayton, as was the case all day, did not go quietly into that good night. KU was 73-70 with less than 20 seconds left in the second half before Jalen Crutcher, Dayton's goalkeeper, did this:
Crutcher finished with 12 points, all from 3 points. He was one of four Dayton players to have two digits, Ryan Mikesell and Obi Toppin adding 19 and 18, respectively. Toppin added nine boards, three blocks and a doozy print of Steph Curry before having any trouble later.
Defeat is the first of the season for Dayton, but the way she competed this week in Maui proves she deserves to be in the top 25. He beat Georgia and Virginia Tech several days in a row to open the game. test before pushing one of the top five Kansas teams to the brink. Kansas, meanwhile, improves to 6-1 over the season and extends his winning streak to six. After starting his season with a 68-66 loss to Duke, he rebounded well. The Jayhawks have a week off before a big home game against Big 12 Colorado's former big opponent on Dec. 7.
As for the rest of the Maui slice, the results will be transmitted all night. Georgia and Chaminade face seventh at 9pm. ET, followed by the last drink between Virginia Tech and BYU in the match for third place at 23:30. AND.
