Synopsis of Resident Evil – what is the movie about?
In the “Hive”, an underground laboratory, the group Umbrella Corporation experiments with bio-weapons. Of course there must be an accident – a deadly virus is released! Whereupon the central computer Red Queen cordoned off the complex without further ado. A little later, hundreds of employees died – gassed out! A special unit, centered around the tough Rain Ocampo (Michelle Rodríguez), is now supposed to infiltrate the “Hive” and tame the out-of-control AI. It’s a good thing they pick up amnesiac Alice (Milla Jovovich) on the way there, because soon the soldiers’ paths will cross with evil undead and horrible zombie mutants…
Criticism/opinion about the film
Admittedly, it takes a while “Resident Evil” (2002) gets going – but then the action really rips! For the time, the special effects were cool to look at, but currently far from aging well. The sci-fi horror spectacle, based on a video game series of the same name by Japanese software company Capcom, was followed by five sequels!
As a video game, “Resident Evil” is one of the most successful game series of all time. More than 20 virtual games, accessories and spin-offs have been published since 1996, and there are also novels, comics and all kinds of merchandise. It goes without saying that there had to be films based on the survival horror hit – in the form of real films, animated films and anime.
The “Resident Evil” live-action series with Milla Jovovich is one of the most famous works of the entire franchise and is considered a completed saga with six films: “Resident Evil” (2002), “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” (2004), “Resident Evil: Extinction” (2007), “Resident Evil: Afterlife” (2010), “Resident Evil: Retribution” (2012) and “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” (2016).
With a total gross of over 1.2 billion USD, the “Resident Evil” films are among the most successful video game adaptations of all time, even though the individual spin-offs themselves have had to receive rather mildly rave reviews from fans and press.
With “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” In 2021, an attempt was made to reboot the cult “Resident Evil” live action series – which ended in a disastrous flop (gross: 41.8 million USD).
