Researchers create molecules capable of neutralizing coronaviruses

IResearchers at the University of Toronto, Canada, developed replica peptides, called peptidomimetics, that neutralized the coronavirus and detected the presence of the infection in human cell cultures, reports an article published in the journal Galileo.

The peptidomimetics identified that integrate the group of D-peptides, were created in order to simulate the spike protein, used by SARS-CoV-2 to attach to the ACE2 receptor – a substance that lives on the surface of several cells in the human body.

During the study, the molecules developed by the scientists managed to bind to this receptor even before the coronavirus itself, thus preventing the installation of the infection.

According to the research, explains Galileo, the D-peptides also neutralized with a similar potency the infection by the Alpha, Beta and Gamma variants.

The results of this laboratory experiment were published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
