Red, white or sparkling wine? These are the best Portuguese wines of the year

With quality increasing year after year in the most diverse national producing regions, it could not have been an easy task. But the jury tasted, scored and elected the best Portuguese wines of the year, among 1450 references taken to the Wines of Portugal Contest – the highest number ever -, organized by ViniPortugal, and which took place between the 2nd and 6th of May. The winners were announced last Friday, the 6th, in a Dinner and Awards Ceremonywhich took place in Convent of San Francisco, in Santarém.

With the aim of distinguishing the diversity and excellence of wines produced in Portugal, between May 2 and 4, a Jury made up of 109 experts, 86 national and 23 international judges in the sector, including winemakers, sommeliersjournalists and wine educatorswere in charge of selecting the best ones during several Masterclasses, dinners with producers, visits and, of course, wine tastings.

Among the international judges stood out Amelia Singerfrom UK; Araik Manukyan e Kateryna Yushchenko from Ukraine; Henrik Dahl Jahsen from Norway; Maurício Roloff e Edward Milan from Brazil; Fredrik Akerman from Sweden; Georgina Estrada from Mexico and Julia Coney, Randall Bertão from the United States and Scott Zebarth from Canada. Then, on the 5th and 6th of May, the Grand Jury – made up of names like Bento Amaral, Dirceu Júnior, Evan Goldstein, James Tidwell, Luís Lopes and Sandra Tavares Silvaevaluated the best wines in the competition in the final phase, choosing the big diamonds and the best of the year.

The best wines of 2022 are elected

O Casa de Santar Vinha dos Amores, 2017, by Global Wines, was chosen as best of the yearhaving been distinguished, in their category, seven more references, in addition to 36 medals with Great Gold, 107 with Gold and 291 distinguished with Silver, in a total of 442 medals.
