Red Devils, the first F35 aircraft of the 6th Wing landed in Ghedi

At 10.36 he landed at the Ghedi military airport the first F35 «Lightning II» assigned to the 6th Wing of the Red Devils Air Force. The aircraft of the fifth generation and of American manufacture, is the first example in force in the department that he has been flying with Tornadoes for 40 yearsintended for gradual disposal.

At the landing ceremony, in addition to the leaders of the Wing, were present General Alberto Biavati, Commander of the Air Squad (former pilot of the Red Devils at the time of Desert Storm), and General Francesco Dress, Commander of the 1st Air Region ( former commander of the 6th Wing). Many authorities were present, the prefect of Brescia, some mayors and the president of Confindustria Brescia, Franco Gussalli Beretta, for a passage that marks an era in the history of Italian military flight and in particular that of the Red Devils.

Today was an event with a symbolic value, given that the F35 in all likelihood will not remain in Ghedi for now: it will join the other F35s already in force at the 32 ° Stormo on the Amendola base (Foggia), where the training phase (the so-called “car passage” of the pilots): it will probably return to Ghedi at the end of the summer, when the adaptation works of the base will be completed (interventions worth several million euros which included the construction of 30 armored shelters, in addition to the introduction of flight simulators, indispensable since there is no two-seater training version of the F35).

The advent of the F35 marks the transition to a hyper-technological aircraft (considered a sort of computer with wings), equipped with sensors and avionics systems that provide the pilot with infinite information in real time. Which will now fly by itself: in fact, the two-member crew disappearedpilot and navigator, made usual by the Tornado.

The F35 was also chosen by numerous other countries: Israel, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Poland, Singapore, Finland, Norway, Germany, Greece and even Switzerland. A circumstance that further integrates the operations of Italian aviation at an international level with the countries of NATO or in any case of the Western bloc.

The cost of the project, in the US as in Italy, has not failed to arouse controversy. Our country has reduced the number of copies purchased at 9030 of which in the B version with vertical take-off, half of which destined for the Navy to operate in the row of the embarked fleet.
