Ironically, in the high season, the corona numbers skyrocket on Mallorca. Yesterday, the health authorities in the Balearic Islands recorded more new corona infections than ever before. Almost 800 tests were positive on the holiday island. So far, one day in January held the sad record with 780 cases, as the ARD writes. The seven-day incidence in Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands has risen to 265, according to local authorities.
Andrés Mitter is the owner of a sporting goods shop in Port de Sóller. He lives from the tourists. And yet he says: “I think that restrictions are necessary today.” Because: “The people have become more carefree,” he tells the ARD. No wonder: “There are hardly any restrictions: you can now walk across the street without a mask.”
Reintroduction of the “Corona night rest”
So it is hardly surprising that these days some people even want the night curfews back. At least one wants to reduce the rapidly increasing number of infections again. That writes the “Mallorca-Zeitung”. Mayors, who are powerless against binge drinking by tourists in their communities, are calling for a reintroduction of the “Corona night rest”.
Hospital directors are also alarmed. Even restaurateurs would be better off if the restaurants on Mallorca weren’t open until late at night. The nightlife is increasingly shifting to the beach anyway because many nightclubs are closed. Controls of the larger and larger groups of party-goers are hardly feasible there.
Only twelve percent of the intensive care beds are occupied
And yet: the Balearic government itself rejects new corona restrictions. The situation in the hospitals has relaxed. Currently only twelve percent of the beds in the intensive care units are occupied. Mallorca and the neighboring islands have therefore not yet planned to curfew at night. (pbe)
