Real Sociedad wants new Isak deal: “Working to ensure that BVB does not pose a threat”

Buyback option below market value

Alexander Isak (21) is one of the former top talents who did not make their breakthrough at BVB – but even more so at Real Sociedad. The Spaniards bought the Swedish striker in 2019 for 6.5 million euros transfer fee and landed a direct hit: 38 goal participations and an increase in market value to currently 40 million euros. At that time, however, Borussia Dortmund secured a buyback option in the amount of 30 million euros, which will apply from this summer until 2023.

“We are working to ensure that Borussia does not pose a threat,” said Real sports director Roberto Olabe of the “Marca”. Accordingly, the fifth in the LaLiga is working on a contract extension with Isak to improve pay. “The voice of the player always has weight. He decides where to sign. We’re relaxed with Alex, Borussia has a buyback option, but it’s him who has to accept it, ”said Olabe.

BVB brought Isak in January 2017 as a 17-year-old from AIK Solna for EUR 8.6 million and awarded him to Willem II after two years in which he scored a goal in 13 games for the professionals. He turned in the Eredivisie Swede up and collected 21 points scorer in 18 games before Real Sociedad signed him.

Three ex-BVB professionals around Isak play for Real Sociedad San Sebastián

“We are in talks with his advisors and we would change the terms of the contract. We believe we are on the right track, ”said Olabe. In addition to Isak, La Real has another ex-Dortmund man in the ranks, who today has a market value of 40 million euros: Mikel Merino. The 24-year-old midfield all-rounder moved from CA Osasuna to BVB in the summer of 2016 after a strong second division season for 3.75 million euros, where he was unable to bring his class onto the pitch. This was followed by a move to Newcastle United and in 2018 to San Sebastián, where he became a Spanish international.

The third ex-Dortmund in the squad is Joker Adnan Januzaj (26), who came on loan for the black and yellow in the first half of 2015/16. Real Sociedad got him from Manchester United in 2017 for € 8.5mn and is currently working on an extension of the contract, which will end in 2022. “His case is similar to Isak’s. He is an example of the club’s capital and resources available to our coach, ”said Olabe.
