Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the new exclusive game of a PlayStation 5 still very young, practically newborn, and in addition to being a high-quality and very fun game, it also has the merit of demonstrating everything that this console can do. Here is our analysis of the new Ratchet & Clank.
Because if that’s how they look, and that’s how they are played, P gamesS5 when this console is just born, I am excited to imagine what it will be like in 2, 3 or 4 years.
Ratchet & Clank It is a saga that is almost 20 years old. Created by the Insomniac Games studios, the same game makers as the recent titles of Spider-Man in order to PS4 and PS5, focuses on the story of a character of a species known as “lombax” who believes he is the last of his kind, and his adventures with a small robot. On Rift Apart We find another lombax, which belongs to another dimension, which we will go through to solve the problem presented by the game: the stability of the multiverse has been broken, and now the dimensions coexist and collide with each other.
This may sound a bit complicated, but it is far from it. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is an adventure game focused on a fun and simple story (but not simple), which seems not only a game but an animated movie, yes, like Pixar’s, one of the most common comparisons with this saga. In fact, the series had its own movie in 2016, based on a game in the series that arrived the same year. Rift Apart is a game that proudly feels like a game, like a good game, without the need to simulate a realistic, dark movie experience.
Regarding the plot, and without much detail, I can assure you that the story of Rift Apart meets: two lombax travel between planets and dimensions fighting a common enemy, with the intention, moreover, of repairing the multiverse. In addition to Ratchet, the game introduces us to Rivet, his counterpart in another dimension. But Rivet isn’t just the same female character. No way. Rivet has his own personality, his own story and character. And in a way, Rivet is the real star of Rift Apart. A fresh air in a saga with so many years and so many stories told.
But the most important in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, as in any game in the saga of Ratchet & Clank, is its playability. And this time, on PS5, she is accompanied by maps, worlds, effects and mechanics that make only one thing clear: this is a new generation game, do not hesitate.
First of all, the maps are large, full of life, and ridiculously detailed. There is no corner to which you look that you do not find some living being, some detail, many plants, boxes and things with which you can interact. By hitting one of these plants or boxes, you will get a response, either a splash of colored liquids or a sea of physical particles between the remains of the boxes and the loot you get from them.
Ships are seen in the distance, mas secondary characters, undiscovered or simply decorative areas, and from time to time dimensional ruptures appear, which we will talk about. In summary, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart it is a visually stunning game. One of the best I’ve played in terms of its visuals, it’s that simple.
And that visual section is accompanied by an exceptional, varied, frantic combat. Both Ratchet and Rivet have a lot of different weapons to fight against endless hordes of enemies, which, thankfully, they share between them, which makes it easy to level them up. Combat is a mixture of shots with the possibility of dodging enemies using a kind of dash (or fast scrolling) and change one weapon for another in real time, thus varying the combat strategy. Every confrontation, in many ways, is different.
For example, it is common for this type of situation to arise: a group of enemies of different types (from the weakest to some powerful and very resistant) attack you, so you use a weapon that briefly paralyzes them to take care of the most weak using a weapon that can kill several in a single shot, and throw a couple of grenades at the most powerful, then dodge attacks that come from another angle and continue to switch from one weapon to another until the threat ends. And to this you must add the dimensional breaks.
In the different maps there are dimensional portals that allow you to jump immediately from one place to another, either in the distance or perhaps just a few meters from where you are, which allows you to get behind enemies that are attacking you in an instant. and add this sudden change of location to your combat strategy.
Again, all this may sound a bit complex, but after one or two battles you will become familiar with the natural combat system, and muscle memory, the one we use almost always when playing, will come into action without you even thinking about it. What you are doing. This is a game with a good combat system.
In conclusion, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the new jewel of PS5, which arrives shortly after Returnal with the intention of reminding us that the new generation of consoles is here, and PlayStation studios and their exclusives are ready to take advantage of it. That includes, of course, the use of the DualSense control and the way these games take advantage of it. In the case of Rift Apart, the attacks you make or receive, and the events around you while you explore the maps, translate into different vibration patterns in the controller with its haptic motors. And furthermore, the triggers of the DualSense They allow to execute different actions and shots with the weapons. I want to see more of that in PlayStation 5 games in the future, but in the meantime, this is one of those games worth trying.
