A swimmer appears to have been killed by a shark off the northeast coast of the United States. An eyewitness saw the woman off Bailey Island, Maine injured in the suspected attack, the Coast Guard said. Kayakers would have taken her to the beach, where her death was found. The incident is being investigated.

The coast guard called for swimmers and boaters to be careful and warned to avoid seals or schools of fish. These are considered prey for predatory fish.

Shark attacks are extremely rare in the area around 175 kilometers northeast of Boston. According to statistics from the Florida Museum, there was only one in all of Maine. According to local press reports, it occurred in 2010 and was not fatal. The marine researcher James Sulikowski told the Portland Press Herald that in the current case it is most likely a great white shark. The predators can be more than five meters long.
