Riots in Kazakhstan

The first ever military operation by the collective forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) helped restore law and order in Kazakhstan. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

“The fact that with the help of the CSTO forces it was possible to restore the situation, the law and order is being restored, it is very important. In fact, this is the first such operation by the CSTO forces. Together, we have completed a very important task. This will allow the leadership of the Republic of Kazakhstan to resolve issues of a socio-economic and political nature in a free, calm mode, in a dialogue with society, ”the Kremlin’s official website quotes Vladimir Putin.

The President of the Russian Federation noted that the CSTO peacekeepers managed to take control of the republic’s vital facilities and infrastructure. This allowed the Kazakh security forces to switch to special operations inside the country.

Putin stressed that those citizens who advocated lower prices for liquefied gas and those who took to the streets with weapons in their hands are completely different people. Earlier, the Russian president compared the events in Kazakhstan with the Ukrainian protests on the Maidan in 2014. According to him, the same technologies were used both there and there.

CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas announced the completion of the peacekeeping mission in Kazakhstan. The collective forces will be withdrawn from the republic as scheduled. The military has already begun to prepare equipment and materiel for loading into aircraft.

The situation in Kazakhstan began to escalate on January 2. Spontaneous protests escalated into clashes between protesters and the police and acts of looting. As a result of the protests, 20 security officials were killed. President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has introduced an emergency regime. He also appealed for military assistance to the CSTO to overcome the “terrorist threat”. Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan said that people who had previously fought in hot spots on the side of radical Islamists participated in the riots. The military arrived in the republic from Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
