The news was advanced by the Diário de Notícias da Madeira.

The accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, during the last stage of the Madeira Wine Rally, when the victim crossed the road on foot and was picked up by the vehicle in which the Madeiran driver Miguel Gouveia was following.

The trampling occurred in Serra de Água, municipality of Ribeira Brava, in the west of the island, and forced the interruption of the stage.

In a statement, Ireneu Barreto expressed “his enormous consternation and regret at the death of a young spectator” and “offers his deepest condolences” to the victim’s family and friends.
