The news was advanced by the Diário de Notícias da Madeira.
The accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, during the last stage of the Madeira Wine Rally, when the victim crossed the road on foot and was picked up by the vehicle in which the Madeiran driver Miguel Gouveia was following.
The trampling occurred in Serra de Água, municipality of Ribeira Brava, in the west of the island, and forced the interruption of the stage.
The victim was transported to the Dr. Nélio Mendonça, in Funchal, but ended up not being able to resist his injuries.
“The Madeira Wine Rally Organizing Committee and the Tasting Direction regret to confirm that the young woman involved in the incident that occurred during PEC 17 Rosário 2, ended up not being able to resist the injuries she suffered. In this painful moment, we address our feelings to family and friends”, reads the note published yesterday, reporting the death of the eight-year-old child.
The representative of the Republic for Madeira, Ireneu Barreto, and the president of the regional Legislative Assembly, José Manuel Rodrigues, expressed their sorrow for the death yesterday.
In a statement, Ireneu Barreto expressed “his enormous consternation and regret at the death of a young spectator” and “offers his deepest condolences” to the victim’s family and friends.
In the same vein, the president of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, José Manuel Rodrigues (CDS-PP), offered condolences to the family and to Club Sports Madeira, responsible for organizing the rally.
“This is a misfortune that overshadows our Tour of Madeira”, wrote José Manuel Rodrigues in a note sent to the newsrooms.
The Madeira Health Service (Sesaram) and the mayor of Funchal, Pedro Calado, from the team that won the Madeira Wine Rally 2022, also expressed their regret over the death of the child.
According to the Diário de Notícias da Madeira, the Automobile Federation will bear the costs of the child’s funeral.
